Transmission swap?

Transmission swap?
My friends 56 panel did come with a 3 speed and someone had changed it to a HD truck ford 4 speed. The one with the granny gear.
He has two ford normal 4 speed ones and would like to know if they would bolt up to the bell housing?
All forward gears work fine but will not go in reverse with motor running. When draining he found a small like 1" long by 5/16th very shinny piece and that little part might be the reverse problem?
This truck has the oem 6 in it and seems to run fine.
Any advice guys?
Thanks

This is the pin GLR is referring to. It's possible it fell into the trans and a new one was put in the shifter, otherwise the shift lever would be flopping all around. I don't think it would be your reverse problem, tho. Can you get it in Rev with the engine stopped? Maybe your clutch is just dragging? Does it grind a lot?

Well after we fired the old girl up and drove it around my drive the tranny started working as it should or at least that is what my friend told me. I did one round and then he did like 4. So guess it was just the clutch and has not been used in maybe 20/30 years. All went fine till the NEW piece of crap Airtex fuel pump quit. Dag China and Mexico mess we have today.
But I would still like to know any info that you guys might have as far as replacing this HD 4 speed with a like 4 speed car one.
Thanks for a fast reply and the picture of the parts. Very helpful for sure.
