Brakes

Instead of swapping the rear axle for one that looks nothing like the original, you can just swap the brakes. Backing plates, shoes, drums, and e-brake hardware from any F-250, 1957 through about 1975 will bolt right on your stock rear. Just make sure you get the 12 1/8" x 2" (most common) setup. Now you can use 1948-66 F-2/F-250 16" wheels, and your stock hubcaps will fit. If you get them from a 1970's truck, you will also get the self adjuster setup.

Chuck, this backing plate out swap option makes it easy to keep the Timken. My issue with doing this is the tallest 16" tire I could find is about 32" tall. (235/85-16)

Isn't the stock 4.86 gear with the stock 34" tall 7.50-17's a 45 MPH truck? How is it with a 32" tall tire?

I would have liked to keep the stock rear but, I'd like to go a bit faster. What options are out there to address this? Overdrive?

Scott,
All you have to do is get a 4.11 conversion kit.

The 48 F2 I sold had a bad rear diff so I sold it with the Timken from my 52 F3. They both needed new drums which I "thought" were near impossible to find.

Had I known I had other options when I made that decision I might be calling you for the 4.11's.

Right now I have a 72 F250 Dana 60 with 3.73's. Running the F2 shock mounts and 16" innies with stock hub caps. I think the Timken looks better.

Live and learn I guess. Thanks for the reply Chuck.

Does anyone know where I can get the 4.11 kit for my stock timkin? I like the idea of maintaining a stock look on my build.

I appreciate all the help and information you guys have given me. So far I have not had any luck finding a parts f-250 to get a rear axle and rims from but I'm sure one will come along. I'm in southern MB in case anyone knows of one.

I looked those up and found them on wheelvintique. That looks like a good option. Do these clear the 14" drum?

I may just end up ordering one and seeing if it fits before buying the set.

Send a PM to 1950FordF3. He is the guy that posted the pic and says they clear the 14" drums.

I didn't post the link correctly. Trying again. Its on page 4 "1950F3 what 8-lug pattern fits" https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...tern-fits.html
