At least you have a good starting point to build a sharp looking truck.

Unfortunately you're right.

I was hoping to get a year out of it before I did any major work. I need to finish this up.

Then it will be on to the motor.

About an hour with a buffing wheel. Just giving my son an expectation for how the rest of the truck should look.

Before.

After

Red is the worst color for fading like that. So how bad is the motor? Does the truck get around OK? IMO anything but a full rebuild is a wast of time and money so if the truck is usable I'd suggest just running it for now and rebuild or swap in another motor when you have time.

Truck gets around fine. Down on power though and I won't park in a driveway due to leaking oil. I've had the truck 2 weeks and I've put in 2 qts of oil. So as soon as I finish the bike build the truck goes in the garage.

Getting a full rebuild. I'll do all the work except the head work. I'll just rebuild to stock. I can go crazy with over building crap and making power but all I need is a stock reliable motor. Only thing I may do budget permitting is a mild cam.

If you have good junkyards around you, gt40s from explorers are a solid upgrade over e7s. They'll be between 75-150 for a set depending on pricing of the yard. E7s are garbage.

Ok I don't know model numbers so I assume you are talking heads?

Yep. Heads off a 5.0 explorer (gt40s) are dirt cheap and while they aren't the best either, they're a substantial improvement over some of the worst heads imaginable (e7s).

I pulled mine off an explorer that had unknown mileage. Valves and seats were good, so I was careful when porting to keep em that way. I have ~250 in them with machine work (milling, cleaning, checking). That doesn't include springs or drilling out the head bolts.

Any 5.0 explorer will do, I'm not positive of the years but it's something like 95-01..been a while since I've paid attention. The later models had "gt40p" heads that require the use of long tubes because of the spark plug angle.

I'm running the p's.

Ok another question. Will they be stamped with these numbers somewhere?

They do, they'll have gt40 on what I believe is the exhaust side, again it's been a while for me....but they're definitely stamped.
