H-Pipe Crossover?

Some of you may know had Rams horn manifolds and Porter mufflers installed in my '64 last fall with "true dual" 2" exhaust tubes extending all the way out exiting at the bumper.

Sounds excellent though lately starting at, and around 65 mph, it has a drone in the cab or a kind of resonance, while it's OK on a trip across town I definitely would not want to make any kind of a road trip more than a few minutes with it like that because it's loudest exactly at the speeds where a long cruise would typically be at.

Would installing an H-pipe or crossover tube reduce the drone or volume at these higher speeds? I've read they "mellow out" the exhaust and provide more power. Hm.

Ted if the pipes go all the way out under the bumper, I'm gonna say it's your choice of muffler. Too loud bro.

I went with a better flow turbo on mine for that reason. With 4in tips it does sound good at idle.

Well I wondered about that, but there's just this point of resonance I guess you'd call it, that's why asking about a crossover. It's real well behaved otherwise except at those 60-65+ highway speeds.

I would try a crossover just in front of the mufflers. You got nothing to loose. They are simple to fabricate and always decrease back pressure which equals free horsepower.

It could perform double duty as a kind of driveshaft safety loop, too.

This something any exhaust shop should be able to knock out in about 20 minutes right? Maybe $50 bucks or so?

You would think so.

They look like these. Steel pack mufflers, they generally don't get loud unless stomping on the go pedal. Just zipping around they have a nice low rumble or burble. Don't need to annoy neighbors or anything like that, in a residential area.

The crossover is worth a little power. Probably not anything you will notice but it can be cheap, so possibly a good power / dollar upgrade. It does make it a hair quieter; it will not be a huge difference.

I don't know if it will fix the problem, though.

Well it runs and sounds great. But I need my hearing or, at least don't need tinnitus anyway. It needs a road trip anyway, to burn all the carbon out.

The old single exhaust terminated (eventually, ha ha) before the rear wheels. Well I had it all figured, that the dual pipes running another several feet and straight out the back would make the cab pretty peaceful at highway cruise. Oops. Will have to try a crossover, if the drone goes away it will be fine I think.

I'm assuming your mufflers are well under the bed and away from the cab.

The H - pipe will improve performance but i doubt it will help with the noise.

Sorry, but if your looking for a little less sound, the only way your going to achieve that, change your muffs - as was suggested. The ones you have,,, make noise.

My truck has true duals right now, I've got headers that collect at 3" then reduced to 2 1/2" and flowmaster super 44's and after that the pipe is reduced down to 2 1/4" (it was all free pipe). I'm running a 292 in my truck with that exhaust and it's loud, even at idle. Sounds very aggressive. Mine exhaust drones a bit, but it's nothing to bad. Maybe you could try the mufflers im running or something similar

My truck used to have those headers and about 3 ft of pipe to the mufflers and then nothing after, you better believe it would rattle your teeth because it was so loud haha a trip on the highway was like standing next to a rock concert. Your ears would ring for 20 minutes afterward.

Trust me put an H pipe in the system. This is a 64 with a Y block and 2 1/2 inch exhaust all the way back and with true duals it was annoying as heck. Put in the crossover and it mellowed it right out. Not crackly and no drone anymore

Forgot to add that they are Magna Flo mufflers

Nice pics! Sure that's 2.5" pipe though? Looks pretty stout.
