western junior mirrors

According to some old threads I have type 3 western junior mirrors on my 70SCCS.
I am looking for some suggestions on what type of material to use beneath the clamps on the vertical bar to tighten up my mirrors. When on the highway, the air moves them until I cant see with them. The only thing I could think of to use was some heavy electrical tape but I would like to stay away from that. Any other alternatives that anyone is using would be good. I couldnt find anything from just looking at mirrors.

Change out the clamps and bolts. I believe you can get them at any hardware store. New clamps, new bolts with acorn nuts are available. Measure the diameter or take a clamp with you, get one size smaller if needed.

If your wife won't let you steal the inner tube out of her bicycle tire for mirror clamp shims , cut a length of black Gorilla-brand tape the width of the mirror clamp. The first layer goes sticky side out around the upright below the clamp in question. The remaining layers go sticky side in. You keep wrapping until you've accumulated enough thickness to allow the clamp to snug tightly when you easily slide your self-created "inner tube" under the loosened clamp. Then snug the clamp and you're done.

A bonus is that the shim you make from Gorilla tape won't gradually compress and eventually start slipping again like the rubber inner tube material.

thanks for the replies. I like the combination of tape and inner tube. I think I will also add new nuts and bolts that are not rusted out. If I remove the mirrors all the way from the door, I guess i should put a piece of rubber between there as well.
