So you mean something like this? So do you want the lever or the squeeze type? At least the door panel is base is metal and probably a lot more durable.
1967 Ford pickup doors (picture #1) have the lever-style door release and no push-button provision for locking the door. To lock this door, you would push down on the release handle on the driver's side or pull up on the passenger-side handle.
The '68-'72 style (pictures # 2 thru 7) had a squeeze-type release and the door lock button. Obviously, due to the differences in door opening and locking hardware, the door panels do not interchange.
Yes are going to definitely need some 67-72 door handle mechanisms, might have to change the end latch rods and assemblies that catch the striker?

Unfortunately, I am not much help to you. I have had both types of doors apart but never considered trying to swap the 68-72 handle into a 73-79 door. Usually body parts, door hardware, etc. don't swap easily between the two generations so I suspect that some fabrication skills would be required to make it happen. Hopefully another member can give you better insight into your question.
