Occasional blue smoke??
Hello. I am Ken and I own a 2008 Ford F250 SD with the 6.4L turbo diesel. I have owned the truck for 3 years, and the previous owner had the truck serviced regularly at the dealership. I too keep the truck serviced with frequent oil changes, and other service as needed. The truck, as far as I can tell, does not burn oil. It runs great. But, occasionally, the truck will blow blue smoke for 30 seconds to a minute, and then it clears up. I also get the message on the dash that tells me to "drive to clean exhaust filter" every once in a while, say about once a month or once every 6 weeks. Could the smoke be caused by a bad DPF? The truck has 230K miles on it.

That's good to know. But I'm getting blue smoke quite often, like every day! Is it regenning that often? Since it has over 223k maybe it's time to replace or delete the filter??

I have 106k on my 08 6.4 and have owned it from day 1. I have done EVERYTHING as far as servicing, and mine has recently started "blue smoking" while regenning. This has started to bother me due to what others on here have said about lifter and rocker arm issues, #8 piston meltdowns, etc.
I've never deleted it due mainly to a lack of funds ( I work for the county therefore am paid by taxes, which like most firefighters and policeman we are not paid well for the job we sacrifice for). I have had every oil change analyzed by Blackstone and no trends have yet been set, but the recent blue smoking has me worried as the previous ones were always just grayish. The DPF was changed out at 36,000k due to a servicing issue, so mine has a little extra time on the life meter. Any thoughts would be really helpful. Thanks guys. And gals

My 08 6.4L started blowing heavy blue smoke at every regen which started occurring every 100-200 miles. It was embarrassing going down the highway. My DPF was done for. If I wanted a "new" DPF it would have been a remanufactured one from the dealer (no OEMs anymore), at a cost of $2500 materials and labor. No way was I gonna put a reman unit on this truck. So I deleted.
All other engine components checked out fine. It was a shot DPF. My truck runs alot better now, mileage is better and no more DPF crap and clouds of blue smoke.
