Great truck story for all of you

Ok so this story is about my friend and his son and a trip they took in his 39 Tonner in . I have been hearing about this since I was 9, now I have photos to go with the story,

1958 my friend was on vacation had seen this Buick for sale in Cheboygan, MI for $500. He had to have the car so when they got home to Colorado he got a loan for the car and fixed up his old 39 Tonner for the trip.

My friend and his son (5 years old at that time) headed back to get the car with only one overheat and one broken brake line to trouble them on the 1500 mile trip. 4 Days later they arrived in Michigan to pick up the car. The truck was backed into a ditch and with ramps the car was loaded on the back. This seemed like a good idea until they tried to get out of the ditch. Took some time but it worked and off they went back to Colorado. One problem now was that the car was very heavy so each time they hit a bump the front of the truck would come off of the ground causing the use of the brakes to bring it back down. My friend’s son still has both the car and the truck, and both run.

So the buick's rear wheels were off the ground? That's a wheelie lookin' for a place to happen.

Yup, note where I said that he had to use the brakes on the truck to keep the front wheels down on the ground every time they hit a bump. Talk about white knuckles for 1500 miles. Sheesh. My friend was a tough old guy, survived WW2 so I guess he could do anything he put his mind to after that.

Wow, 1500 miles like that! How many days was it? I can't imagine you would make more than 400 miles a day driving straight through, couldn't have been averaging over 35-40 mph at best.

My friends son (little guy in the photo back in 58 )said that I need to come get his fathers old model T roadster p/u, so we are going over today. I first saw this when I was about 10 years old. Now it is coming home to me.

Good story. I've seen similar attempts to do this with not-so-good results.

Great story! The method to secure the Buick to the truck is surely unique and can see why it was light on the front end! Guessing he maybe sold his Ford Script flatbed to pay for the trip.

Really long days if the front end was leaving the ground. Did he make the kid ride on the front bumper for ballast!
