Sure. The thing you'll be missing is the ease of gear choice, since the 57-72 9" rear will accept a different center section with any choice of gear you want. The later F-100's came with much more highway friendly gears than early axles, so you're more likely to find a one-stop-shop. Using the Dana from the '56 loses that ability, and you'll be stuck with whatever you have without a costly gear swap. Typically they came with 3.92-4.11 gears.
