That would be the last engine I'd swap into one of my trucks and I like Cat engines (well all but the c7 series).
Pulled one out of a guys C6500 a while back, when he heard what it would cost to repair it, he paid us to swap in a 5.9.

True. The cummins is quite ubiquitous. Easy to come by. Powerful and reliable. Instead of throwing a worn out 7.3 into a 12,000 pound truck, empty weight. The easiest fix is swap out the slush box for a set of gears. Instead of him stumbling around trying to cobble a solution to an imaginary problem.

Now he wants to put a c7 in it. .

The good day's of cat engines ended in 2003, IMO. While a cat is a powerhouse it lacks the reliability of a cummins.

You know what you're talking about. The C7 has power. That's about it. Not that reliable, expensive to keep running.

The old 3406 in the big trucks was a good runner. But it was mechanical and 20 plus years ago. Another favorite of mine is the DT466 that International made. It would run day in and day out.

Well some people just don't want a manual trans and that's ok, my F-800 has an allision and I'm no going to change it to a manual, my F-450 has a zf6 manual and I'm for sure not swapping it to an auto.
I'm surprised them put a lite weight 545 behind a 7.8 engine to begin with, it's basically an industrial version of a turbo 400 Chevy trans.

Best bet would probably be to swap in an allision md3060 for the electronic lockup and OD to help with the gearing problem.

03 was the last of the good Cats and any Cat engine after 06 I wouldn't want.

DT466 was a good engine but older medium duty IH cabs where rattle can jokes.

I'm just trying to find options. I think with a pickup drivetrain I could be successful at getting my rig with a 3 axel toy hauler down the road at 70

See that's the information I'm looking for. After all I only paid 5 grand for the truck. I'm open to all options other than a manual transmission

I thought they used the c7 in duces and 8.3's in five tons, don't know what the newer stuff has in it, my AM 923 has the old big cam 855, the newer BMY's with 8.3's where more than I wanted to pay.

There's a lot of GM trucks with c7's in my area, their ether good trucks or money pits, no in between. I can rebuild an 8.3 for half the cost of a c7.
