Fuel Pump Not Audible but 2001 Expedition Starts/Runs
2001 Expedition XLT 5.4L 4x4
How loud should the fuel pump sound (whirring) be when turning the ignition key to the ON position without cranking it over?
I am following the Fuel pump/Fuel Pressure Check->Preliminary Inspection steps that are in the Haynes Manual.
"Remove the fuel filter cap and have an assistant turn the ignition key to the On position (engine not running) while you listen at the fuel filler opening. You should hear a whirring sound that last for a couple seconds."
1. I did this and can't hear anything from the fuel filler cap area.
2. I went under the SUV with a stethoscope and listened to bottom of fuel tank, I didn't hear anything either.
3. I removed the spare tire and crawled under the SUV and put my hand on the top part of the fuel pump and could feel a slight vibration, but definitely not significant.
I do hear a much louder whirring sound when I put the ignition in the ON position from what I believe is the ABS Control Module in the front drivers side of the engine below the power distribution box / air filter area. I can hear that every time and feel it when I put my hand on it.
The vehicle starts up and runs. So, just wondering if this is a normal volume or lack there of.
Thanks

The fuel pump will activate for 3-4 secs once the ignition switch is turned to the on position. If the PCM or equivalent doesn't detect ignition, the fuel pump relay cuts off.
Since its in the tank, it might not be that easy to hear but usually, with a helper, it's enough to hear.
Is there an issue that got you to this point. Maybe studdering at full throttle or hard starting?

There are a million issues that got me hear, but as a newbie I was trying to limit the question so I could learn a little more about the expected functioning and following along with my Haynes manual so I approach it systematically. Thanks for your response, I appreciate your experience.
