5R110 died!

So trans started to shirt hard on 2-3 3-4 shifts. Then just would not go at a stop light. Finally got it to move after a rev to get out of rush hour traffic. Temp never got above normal. Could it be the torque converter or is it the trans? Rebuild or replace? I'm a reasonably good mechanic, have pulled several motors and transmissions. Is a swap something that can be done in a home shop?

I think most either buy a reman from Ford or go aftermarket. If mine goes I will go back with a Ford reman. I've never had a diesel trans rebuilt but I can't imagine them being any cheaper to have rebuilt than what you would pay with Ford.

Try giving Ed at FICMrepair.com a call. I have read where he can save you a little $$ on shipping if you decide to go with the Ford reman??? i would think you could handle the swap in you garage...

I may contact him. I got My FICM from him along with the upgraded alternator. By the way the truck has 172K on it.
I had the trans on my 99 rebuild twice. But back then it was only 1500 to rebuild the 4R100. My guy says this trans will be close to double that for a rebuild.

Shane hit it on the head, plus the warranty from Ford is excellent.

No re-flash needed just pull the batteries while your working on it.

I had mine go TU back Dec 29, 2014 Ed got me a VERY good price on a FORD reman.
If my back had not been giving me so much pain I would of done it here at home.
It's not a hard job to pull it and reinstall the new one. The only thing that could
give you a pain is you MUST flush the cooler lines and the tank cooler in the radiator.
You get a new oil to air cooler but the lines and all needs to be fully flushed.

BTW the new trans comes full of fluid so you only need to top it off.

Call Ed he will save you a nice bundle.

Just a guess but I would think that they pre-run them on a
transmission test bench. To do that they have to fill them
and this way they make sure that they have the correct fluid.
Also this way your not fiddling around trying to get all that
air out of the system and fill the torque converter.

I tried to call ed. No return call. The girl that answered the phone made it sound like they had never ordered a trans before.

Considering an ATS. Is it worth the money?

I am somewhat concerned about going with the ford trans with a modded truck with a factory trans. Should I not be?

During the summer when the roads are dry I run the SRL
and for winter with wet roads I run the 8K tow tune.
My trans failed at a common Ford failure point The coast clutch
sun gear to clutch shell weld. I had not done any heavy power
action really before it failed. I think it would of giving up at that
place any way you drove it.

Did you at least give Ed a call?
