The black ICM very seldom goes bad because of its remote mounting.
Your 1996 truck is OBD-1 and not OBD-2.

Do you have any idea what might be causing this issue if you don't think it's the ICM?

Can I drive the truck without that Spout removed?

My guess would be bad caps in the PCM Computer.

Awesome! So would you recommend replacing it? I checked and they sell them at Advance.

Where is the PCM located on this truck?

Thanks again for the help!

I took subford's advice in this thread:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-thread-2.html

I took the PCM to an old school electronics supply store and had them replace the three capacitors.

Total for parts and labor was $38.

For my situation it was a preventive measure. It has not solved the stumble/miss.

My next step is to test/clean the fuel injectors.

Hope the input helps.

This sounds like a bad pickup module in the distributor. Pull the codes see if it got a 211 code.

I pulled the Spout again today and the truck started right up. I turned it off and replaced the spout and then took it to the quarry for four loads total. It runs and starts well when it's hot, so I'm wondering if I can keep using this trick to start the truck?

edit: the SES light is not on and I don't know how to check for codes on OBD1!

I wanted to ask about this spout part - it's a e53b-14a624-0 but I can't find anyone who sells it online.

The truck just died on me on the road, and I pulled the spout connector out and drove it home (33 miles).

Can I run the truck without this spout connector or do I need to replace it?

You need to replace it for computer control.
It is just a shorting bar to connect two wires together.

If it will not run with SPOUT in place but runs OK without it more than likely you have a bad PCM Computer.

Today was the first time that the truck would not run with the spout connector in place.

You mentioned the PCM previously and I looked into it, but I couldn't find a solid replacement in terms of matching the correct engine and tranny.

Is there anything wrong with driving the truck without the spout connector in place?

It should not hurt the truck to drive it with the SPOUT out but you will have no distributor advance.
That would mean a lack of power and fewer MPG.

You would be driving the truck at base timing only.

That's exactly what I thought would happen after I researched it a bit more. I'm going to pull the numbers off the PCM and try to find a match.

I'll update this thread.

Thanks again,

Shawn

I pulled the PCM out and found these numbers:
f6tf-12a650-bsa

Do I need to match all numbers for a new/used PCM? Any recommendations on a source? There is a matching one on ebay for $424.00.

I should also note that the 10 mm bolt holding the PCM plug connector was not even hand tight on there.

Thanks,
Shawn

The F6 along with the BSA are the ones that have to match. All of the PCM's will have the TF and the 12A650 numbers.

One form an auto part store should not cost that much. If you get a used one off ebay after you get it change out the caps as they are getting near the end of their life cycle.
