Fuel Pressure Regulator Location?

Fuel Pressure Regulator Location?
Greetings All,
I'm thinking of adding a fuel pressure regulator to my '84 351W. I'm wondering how important is the mounting location.
I'm currently running a Carter P4600HP electric pump, located inside the left frame rail just downstream of the tank selector valve. (The stock mechanical pump has been removed.) The pump runs great, but I've noticed the output occasionally runs a little high. It is rated at 6-8 psi (perfect for my 2150 2bbl), but sometimes that creeps up closer to 10. (I have a fuel pressure sensor mounted on a tee at the carb inlet.)
I'd like to add a Holley 12-803 regulator. Per Holley's instructions, it says to install it as close to the carb as possible:

How important is the location? It's very crowded at the carb inlet, what with the filter, my added fuel pressure sensor off to the side, and the distributor right in front of that. I'd much prefer to install the regulator at the outlet of the electric pump, where there's plenty of room. Would this location make much (if any) difference in what the carb sees? This doesn't seem like it would matter, but Holley recommends otherwise. Any thoughts?
