2wd to 4wd conversion is it possible?

Friends Is it possible to convert 2wd X to 4wd
?
How hard it's going to be ?
My X is 2000 v10 4wd limited with 160k hard miles.
And the new X is 2004 v10 2wd limited with 30k mi .
My plan is swap all the goodies from the 2000 to the almost new 2004

How big is the fabrication work ???

Thank you

"how hard" will depend on your access to tools and equipment and your skill level using them.

one persons fun weekend project is another persons year long struggle.

I'd suggest reading the threads by people who have done it and evaluate your tools and skills and see how well your they align with the task.

Search ANY of my threads where I ask anything about this and you will see why I sold my first X. It was in AMAZING shape, ran PERFECTLY, and was one of the best colors!!! I sold it for peanuts (It was 2wd) and spent a decent amount getting one shipped up from Houston to replace it.

That's right, it's easier to sell your X, buy one several states away sight unseen, have it shipped to you and start over than it is for you to do the conversion.

I'm not sure exactly how plentiful the EX (4X4 or otherwise) selection is in Mr. Noodi's part of the world.

As Apoc stated, it is much easier to sell your 2wd and buy a 4x4. That said, it also depends on the supply and possible cost of having one shipped to you if that is the route you must take. I have been involved in a couple 2wd to 4x4 conversions and neither went smoothly and one never finished! And the one that did resulted in the owner having spent more than if he would have kept his 2wd and just outright bought a 4x4 also!

Yes, it is possible, and there really isn't any fabrication work, unless you count drilling holes as fabrication work.

How "easy" is it? That depends on your skill level, tool availability and level of patience. I will say this- it is far easier to do this on Excursions and early Super Duty trucks than about any other truck out there. That said, a majority of those who plan this never see it through.

The biggest problem you will have in YOUR situation is wiring/electrical. Your 04 2WD doesn't have the wiring in place to run the electric-shift transfer case (nor the hub lock solenoid) and your ECM isn't programmed to deal with it anyway. Additionally, the wiring between your 00 and your 04 are wildly different, as is the ECM programming- so you're not going to be able to rob that stuff out of the 00 and make it work.

The only way around that would be to find a manually-shifted transfer case out of a SD truck, since it doesn't require the extra wiring/electronics to shift it. Then add aftermarket manual locking hubs. BUT- to do all that, your 04's transmission will have to be set up as a 4x4 transmission- I'm pretty sure the 00's transmission won't work right behind the 04's electronics/ECM.

I agree--sell and buy. 30K miles on a 12 year old vehicle may not be the nirvana you might think. You could switch interiors, replace the engine with a new one and upgrade the outside on the 2000 with less headache and cost. Remember everything you take out of one, you have to put back in the other unless you are just going to part out the 2000.

So...you want to make the "almost new 2004" an old EXCURSION?

You will NOT have a low mileage Excursion.

You will have 160,xxx HARD miles on a 12 year old vehicle/body. I think Joey/Psyclopse has given you excellent information.

Finally, Christie Brinkley is 62 she looks 42, but she has a lot of miles with a lot of different drivers.

I did it about 8-9 years ago on my 2002 X. Well had a shop do it. I was a short process since I had all the parts I wanted to use.

Find and axle you want and get a divorced transfer case then its minor fab. I would spend the money and get a 2005+ axle and use the coils vs leaf springs. Most lift kits will give you all the other parts you need. BDS has 4-link and coil over options which should cover all the front suspension. Dynatrac for free spin hubs. Keep it as manual as possible. electronics and vacuum lines will make it harder.

good luck and post pictures.

Chris
