51 F1 diff question.

My truck's Dana 44 diff is damaged (chipped teeth). It has 4-27 stamped on the right (passenger side) axle tube. Spare f100 axles /diffs are hard to find around here......but, I've just this minute seen an ad for a used 3-54 ring and pinion set (supposedly in good condition) for 75 bucks. No idea what its from though.
Would I have any trouble changing this set, for the 4-27 already in there? Is there anything I should be looking for. thanks for your replies and information in advance.

51 f1 diff question.

ALBUQ F-1 Thanks for your answer. I read the thread and it deals with a Dana41 and there was a satisfactory ending for the owner.
Numbers Dummy says that 3-54 gears didn't come out 'til 1950 (or thereabouts) and were used in Dana 44's in cars. Are the car/truck diffs the same? Probably the axle lengths would be different, but what about bearings, carriers, bolts etc.....would they be interchangeable?
Sorry for all the questions but I have no idea. I'm trying to fix this thing on a (very!) limited budget, and appreciate any help you guys can (and do) give.
Once again, Thanks!

The key is the carrier. Below 3.73 is a different carrier, but as long as you have that, I believe the car parts work in the truck case. Need to use the Truck side gears. Do an Advanced Search on it, several other threads with details.

ALBUQ F -1 and NumberDummy thanks for your replies.
Its a warm....ish day here (10c) so I ventured out into my garage to see exactly what I have here. The numbers stamped on the crownwheel are 1M-4210-B followed by 11x47, then a 1-51. there is something else, but too small for my old eyes.
The small gears (planetary?) part no 4215, are the ones that are chipped. Do you think this would have the right carrier to swap 3-54 gears into. Would the crownwheel and pinion and the 4215 gears need to be a matched set, if I could find a couple of4215's?
Thanks again.

47:11 = 4.27:1

No, 3.54 gears won't fit that carrier.

Only the ring (crownwheel) and pinion gears would be matched. The 2 differential side gears (axle gears) and the 2 differential gears ( the 4 gears inside the differential case) can be changed separately.

51 F1 diff question

ALBUQ F-1, NumberDummy and 49fordv8f4, Thanks for your replies. As it stands this diff is a lost cause. Now I will have to figure out if I am to change the 4215 gears and leave it as a 4-27, or look around the wreckers for an old f100 or explorer diff assembly.
Thanks for your help.

Geoff.
