I just bought a 2006 Ranger with 37k miles on it from my Uncle. I've driven it about 90 miles so far, and yesterday, it died. While accelerating hard yesterday it just died. Now it starts, but and shuts down immediately. If I floor it after start, the engine revs up and down between 2 and 3k RPM. It has a new fuel filter (as of today) and 65 PSI fuel pressure at the rail. Any ideas?

Scan the computer for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers as they can help focus your trouble shoot.
It's not wise to run a cold engine at WOT & with no load on it. The computer rev limiter will kick in at about 3500 rpm & begin turning the fuel injectors off to limit rpm, so the engine has a better chance of not coming unraveled when we do a no-no!!!

 

Turns out the issue was a bad MAF sensor. Replaced it last night and it's back on the road.

 

Ok, good find, fix, feedback & to hear your on the road again. Unusual for the MAF sensor to just suddenly go belly up.
