well... the time finally came to use the panel adhesive on the form for the hood. Got everything ready... mounted the mixer tube to the glue pack and loaded it into the gun. It's two part... black and yellow... big tube (the glue) is black and little tube (hardener/activator) is yellow.
Started squeezing the gun and the black material came right out... BUT no yellow ?? hmmm. Took the tube off the gun and squoze again... yellow started moving but just slightly... tube back on... same story.. removed tube again and only pushed the yellow side... the backer in the yellow tube pushed down better than half way into the tube with no product coming out. again... hmmm. I would have assumed that there was a full tube of each product... we made a hell of a mess playing with it and finally laid it aside till I can call 3M today... maybe faulty pack of material... maybe old stuff... expensive trial at 40 bucks a pack... hopefully 3m lady can straighten it out and maybe replace bad product... more as it becomes available..

Are you using the 3M 08115 or 08116? I have to say that I have used these products for quite a few years and I have never seen that happen. The trigger on the gun is a bit hard to pull just because of the viscosity of the adhesive and the convoluted maze that it is pushed through in the mixing tip. but I have never seen a 3M automix cartridge completely bind up like you describe. The 3M rep should be able to get it sorted out for you.

talked to the rep this a.m. she verified the numbers on the tubes that it is olde product.
this 8115 is two separate tubes that mixes in the nozzle... could not get activator (yellow) out of it's tube at all to mix in the nozzle... she said probably the thinner had gassed off and left the activator hard... that would account for only the 1/2 tube of activator... it shrank and hardened. we tried to push it out with a dowel and couldn't push it out.
getting a refund from the auto parts guy tomorrow and headed to a fresher supplier downtown... more as it happens

08115 vs 08116
What you want is 3M 08116 Panel Bonding Adhesive 3M Panel Bonding Adhesive 08116
You can find it on ebay (item=251886849150) a lot cheaper than at a retail shop. Some vendors offer it as a kit that includes the applicator gun. When using this adhesive I spread some on each surface to be bonded and smooth it out just to be sure that there is good coverage. There are glass beads in the adhesive to maintain a proper clearance between the bonded pieces so that when you "clamp the crap out of it" that there is still enough adhesive left in the seam to make the bond. One cartridge should be enough for the job that you have described.
EDIT: I will also add that I have used and continue to use 3M 08115 panel adhesive. The only difference that I can find between 08115 and 08116 is that 08116 comes with GM and Chrysler certification for use on their vehicles. Personally I have found no difference in the two.

Fusor is what most of the new Fords use, and it is a safe repair procedure on some of their aluminum applications along with 3m. Same with a bunch of other companies.
