'80-'86 Push bar mounting

I finally found a push bar and its on hold i wanted to ask can they be mounted with the oem bumper bolts?

If not is there a bumper bolt with a deeper square to engage the bumper square through the push bar.

To avoid a repeat of the last bar I found, I went ahead and purchased this one, but my question still remains on how these are supposed to be mounted. I seen pictures of people using the same bumper bolts and I would prefer to do that seeing as the bar I purchased is chrome.

Rusty S, this will not answer your question regarding a deeper square, but when mounting a front bumper, I found that the original bolts are capped and sometimes difficult to obtain in a short time. Our local building supply store carries stainless steel carriage bolts which worked just fine. They come in different lengths and the head can be polished and does not look bad.

Thanks for the reply, I might do the carriage bolt route. I just am not sure if its smart to bolt the bumper down without the bolt actually holding square in the bumper hole. Be afraid of moving around.

Besides that, it is safe now to show the one I bought, the link below is the one I purchased. Its brand new in the box made by Rally. Paid quite a bit for it but considering no one makes them anymore and its hard to even find a used one on Esteal, I paid none the less for it.

The carriage bolt had the correct dimension square under the head. It fit the bumper correctly and held securely.

That's good to know, I will take a look when this bar comes in see how thick the mounting flange is and see how deep of a square I will need to engage the bumper. If not I will have to figure something out.

Hopefully some that have mounted these before can give their two cents on how they mounted.

So far I will probably keep the original bolts nothing is wrong with them just doubt they will be long enough. I will probably go with carriage bolts as Lowes sells some stainless steel ones I could try to polish up.

If you use stainless hardware, make sure you use lots of anti-seize on the threads. Stainless bolts and nuts gall really easily when you bear down on them. The HELP! section in most parts stores sell steel bumper bolts with stainless caps on them, and they can easily be polished.

The square part of the bolt doesn't need to reach the bumper, as the mounting pad of the grill guard will have a square cut hole. The square part is only needed to prevent the bolt from spinning, while tightening/loosening the nut. Once tight, the square serves no purpose, much like the hex head of a regular bolt.
Truthfully, the mounting pads on the guard are MUCH stronger than the bumper, and less likely to "round out" if they are being removed many years after installation......

The OEM bolts will work just fine, provided the heads don't round off when removed from the bumper.

Thanks for the reply. Ill have to wait and see as based off the pic they provided it appears the mounting tabs are not square cut.

If that is all the square head is for and the bumper wouldnt move around then ill reuse my old ones if long enough.

I can't see the pic, as the link goes to the "auction ended" page, rather than showing what the item is/was.
The real factory/accessory guards have square cut holes, and used to OEM bolts. Once tight, the bumper is sandwiched between the guard and frame, and will not move without a considerable amount of force. It'll bend long before it'll move, if properly tightened..........

Ah, this one is made by rally but looks to be correct for the 80-86 trucks as its listed. But it also said the pic is not one your getting but actually is an example.

I have a Wildcat Flash brand, looks identical. I mounted it with the factory bolts with no problem. I don't think my push bar has square holes. It probably helps to have the threads really clean so the bolt doesn't spin. Good luck with the install, they look good on these trucks.

Thanks, they do. I originally wanted a flat black powder coated one as once the truck is painted and finished I was going to do the LMC chrome treatment on the front end vs the silver painted grill. But all I found was this chrome one. Hope its not too much chrome down the line. If it is I guess I could always have it stripped down and powder coated.

I cant tell but in the photo it appears to have flat bars welded on for mounting lights. I hope so cause that would save me money from buying those rubber clamp on mounts so I don't have to drill the tube.

Besides that I was looking at these bumper bolts just to add some character.

I know they are listed Chevy/GMC truck, but the high dome would give a unique look.

Stainless is not as strong as a Grade 5 but will do as long as you don't use it to push or pull ANYTHING.
The Rally you got needs to be assembled?
Since not already welded it is typically on the weak side, As said, don't push or pull anything with it. Under $150 is quite reasonable, and looks Great!

That is why is just "flash mounts" to the face of the bumper and does not wrap around to the frame.
