Which trans do I have and what trans fluid should I use?

The trans cooler lines going from 1) the external trans filter to the radiator, 2) the radiator to the auxiliary trans cooler, and 3) the auxiliary trans cooler to the trans filter have rusted out. So, I will be replacing them. The tell take sign was all the trans fluid all over the bottom of the engine and all over the driveway.

I have been reading about 4R100 trans in the 2003 F350, but I believe that was with the 7.3l. I have a 2003 F350 6.0 PSD and have read that the trans should be the 5R110W. Is this correct?

If I have the 5R110W on my truck, what trans fluid should I be using. I was reading an older thread from 2006 about why Mercon should be used instead of Mercon V or any dual spec trans fluid. Not sure I would be able to find Mercon anymore.

All help is much appreciated.

You need to use mercon sp or lv which is supposed to replace sp but you can still get sp and sp is what came in the trans from the factory. If you can't find sp you can use the lv and it is ok to mix them.

Thanks guys. Next question, is there any trans fluid out there better than Motorcraft SP and Motorcraft LV? I have always been using Mobil 1 in my cars, but I don't think Mobil 1 makes something that I can use in the truck.

Motorcraft is about the only thing that comes up when I do a search on Mercon SP.

Nothing better than that I have seen.
Equal to, perhaps.
It's a 5R110, don't go putting anything extra in it.......does not need it and might end up hurting it. It's a robust trans as it is, does not need any "help" from aftermarket additives whatsoever

Thanks. Will add a case of Motorcraft Dexron SP to my Amazon cart. Good times.

lol - I think you and I might have the same truck. I had to replace the HCFM drain plug because it got so corroded that the 6mm allen hole stripped right out. Had to use a screwdriver to hammer a notch into it and then a punch to get it to turn. That was some tough sledding getting the hammer in there with the truck still on the ground. Amazing how much easier the after market drain plugs are.

I have yet to do the blue spring upgrade, but it is on my list of things to do after tax season.

I need another decade out of this truck. Pretty sure that by the time get a new truck, I will know almost everything about this one. Getting to that point with my 1998 Taurus.

I ended up replacing the entire cover, that plug was going nowhere....a real PITA. I could not get the plug out with the cover in a vise......at that point the cover was shot but i still wanted to see if I could, and it would not budge no matter what I tried.

I love the older Taurus! I've driven and sold around 15 I think, place I used to work at would sell them after XXX miles, so were put up for bids to employees. I would go thru the car, top to bottom, drive it for three or four months and sell it.
I had a few that I had to pass on with weak trans. but I never did get burned personally. In fact a few that I had the high bid on had recent trans replacements.
The 3.0 is a good little engine, easy to work on, enough power and good on gas.

No such thing. You need MERCON SP or MERCON LV. There is no such thing as Dexron SP.

dieselfiltersonline has SP and LV. good price too. Might check out 2008 pan and full pleated filter, do away with external filter. 2008 lines might also fit leaving out that bypass filter its a joke anyway.

You can just leave the element out of the external if you upgrade to the 2008 pan and filter.

Any chance you have the part number for the 2008 trans pan? Guessing I would just go with the filter for the 2008 6.0l turbo diesel with this new pan.

Having one heck of a time finding the part numbers for the trans cooler lines for the 2003 5R100 (a/k/a Torqshift). I cannot find the part numbers anywhere and a Ford dealer sent me all the wrong lines after I provided it with my VIN. This might be like my 1998 Taurus. I had to create trans lines going from the transmission to the radiator because they blew out last year and finding OEM ones was impossible.

I just read some stuff you posted on another board about doing a flush and fill on the 5R110. You definitely know what you are talking about. It is good to have people like you sharing your knowledge.

No chance. I don't know part numbers. If I were buying one I'd ask for a pan for a 2009 F-250 automatic. That would get me the right pan.

I'd get the filter for the same truck as above. If you get a filter for an early 2008, or earlier year, it isn't going to fit with the pan.

Part of your problem may be that there is no such thing as a 5R100. There was a 4R100 (those lines won't work for you) and there was a 5R110. Both transmissions were used in 2003.

That's what I'd do regardless if the OEM part is available or not. But that's how I do it.
