1960 aod transmission swap

I have a 1960 f100 and I'm removing the 223 the put in a carbureted 91 302 and a aod transmission. I was just wanting to no what I will have to do to make the transmission work it's a 2004 I believe. Electrical, cable, linkage things like that. Thanks

Welcome to FTE! The AOD is pretty simple. All mechanical, so the wiring should be minimal (sorry, I don't know specifically). There is a kick-down linkage that's pretty important though. If I understand correctly it closes the throttle during shifts to avoid beating up the trans as much. And they don't live long without that hooked up and adjusted correctly.

Wiring may be back up light switch and neutral safety switch. Check the donor wiring set up and take what you need to make those things work.

The linkage is called a TV cable or linkage, for Throttle Valve. No TV cable adjustment = no transmission in short order.

Again, pull from the donor.

You will need to adjust it properly once installed and running BUT BEFORE driving. Google "Ford AOD TV cable adjustment" and you will find written instructions and Youtube videos.

If the transmission is a 2004, it isn't an AOD. The last AOD was made in the 90's. The '91 302 that you have would have had an AOD attached when it left the factory.

If it really is a 2004 transmission it is a 4R70W. It requires a computer to do ANY shifting. Without the computer all you will have is third (maybe it's fourth?) gear.

to make this much easier just run an AOD out of an 88-89 bronco/F150. no computer to mess with.

ok, well you will need a stand alone computer, $300 + and you will need to run either an 8.8 with the rear diff speed sensor or get a tone ring that mounts up to the rear of your trans for another $300+

then you will have to work out the wiring situation

i am sure you can sell that trans you have an easily buy an AOD for half of what you sold your current trans for.

If it's really an AOD then it doesn't need a computer and yes, it will work.

It's pretty common that people get on here asking about their AOD that turns out being an E4OD or 4R70W (or maybe an AODE? not sure about that one), all of which are electronic and do need computers.

Picture of the trans?
If it is an AOD then you need a Lokar TV cable for it and a 50oz AOD flexplate to mate it to the engine. If the 302 has a flexplate on it but you aren't sure what it is from DO NOT use it, if it's for any trans other than an AOD and you install the trans with it the trans will be destroyed the first time you fire the motor.
