My current truck is a '13 F250 CC Short bed with the tailgate step. I have found a few used toppers that are the same color and size but they are all pre 08 that aren't made for the tailgate step.

Would it be possible/probable to modify or customize the non step topper hatch to work with my tailgate? The toppers I've found are the ARE and a really inexpensive covermaster that looks like the ARE/Leer.

From what ive seen the caps are the same, only the glass is different at the tailgate. Dont see why you couldnt buy the correct glass from ARE and bolt it on and swap hardware

 

Yes, we did one at work, I believe all they had to do was order a piece to change on the bottom of the window to match the tailgate shape.

 

Mine DOES NOT have the step, but all I had to do was trim about 1/2" from the bottom aluminum trim of the glass frame.

 

the post 08 trucks with out the step have a square lip where the step would go.

I had an 2003 ARE top that I wanted on a 2008. I trimed the hatch for but inspite of my best efforts it would not lock and it leaked....not that it mattered since you can pop these open with a plastic butter knife.

I know the leer toppers have a different fiberglass piece at the bottom. They're easily changeable and cost about $80 from your local leer dealer.

 

My ARE cap is the same way, just the trim is different. I did try to order the one I needed buy they want the serial number of the cap and insist on sending the one I don't need so I just took the trim off. It leaks a little because of that but no big deal.
