Western Canada transmission rebuild help please?

I bought a 1996 f250 manual 7.3 (270000km) for work and hauling my trailer around 4 months ago. I noticed a growing problem with it downshifting into second from third (it grinds) and i have to slow to 10 km. Took it to a local transmission place they quoted me for a rebuild of around $1500 cdn in labour and likely 1g in parts. Guy said it was the synchro. I have never had to do anything with any of my fords transmissions and wanted to know is there a cheaper route? Is there a better local mechanic in nearby (Live in southern BC)? Anything better after market I should look at that will stop this from happening again?
Thanks all.

If you're mechanically inclined at all get a rebuild kit and do it yourself it is very easy for a manual transmission it seems daunting but it's really not that bad

I am not mechanically inclined. I am more the guy that holds the light for the mechanic.
My mechanic said the overhaul kit was the way to go. Anybody know any good kits they could recommend?
