Explorer sport to Mountaineer power train swap
Hello everyone. I know nobody likes to read Long stories so I will be brief. I have 04 Mercury mountaineer that has no engine, transmission and transfer case (vin 4M2ZU86K14UJ05447) and 01 Ford Explorer sport (1FMYU70E61UB79808).
Explorer has no title and I get it to fix mountaineer.
Question: will the power train swap work?
I went to dealership and gave them all numbers and they told me that engine is the same, transmission is different because explorer has a push button that switches 2wd - 4wd (this can be adopted).
On the contrary my mechanic says it will not work, but he can lye due to the fact that he owes me work and trying to drag it not doing things I need done.
If someone did this overhaul please help me with advice. It drives me crazy va

It will work but will have some issues to overcome. Driveshafts may be an issue. Are the shafts still there in the Mounty?
The '01 motor, is that the 4.0 SOHC?
If so, replace the cam chain tensioners and guides while it is out of the vehicle. Inspect that motor closely while you do the job. Excessive wear due to poor maintenance can be a real issue. However, new tensioners and guides will help.
Engine computers may be different--'01 to '04, two different models and a generation change to boot. What motor was in the Mounty?

V6 to V6 is less of an issue. But, the engine controls may be different. Compare the two. You may have to bring the older one over. It's one of the things to check when doing this kind of swap. If you still had the intake etc off the '04 it would bolt right up and you'd be good. But since you are bringing over intake & efi from a different and older model, it is possible it won't just plug in.
