Yet another DEF question

To add or not to add, that is the question.

2015 6.7 with 9K miles. Many say don't add DEF until warning light appears or it will confuse computer. I have no warning but under information option it says "less than half full". Add now or wait?

Thanks.

You can add it... I've added it under many circumstances and any issues or lights will go away on restart or after awhile both on my 2011 which had 125k when traded and now 19k on the 2016. But I never had had any lasting issues. When it gets well below zero here filling it may be hard. It freezes in the filler tube..then can't fill until the truck has run for many miles..so I fill it before a artic blast now.
If it doesn't take it to the dealer because some thing is wrong with the unit.
Just add it when and were you want. Add it when the truck is off. That's what I do..

I have been driving Ford 6.7s since 06/10, and I never let my DEF fall below 1/2 full. I have never had any problem whatsoever.

I add a 2-1/2 gallon jug from Wally World when the dash info screen says it's below 1/2 full. Been doing it since I bought the truck with no 'confusion' on the 'puter so far. Only one time did I let it go to the warning message and that took more miles then I thought it should to reset.

There is a guy on this forum user name Tom. Who is very knowledgeable. and gave me some advise. every once in a while check to see under information and see if you are under 1/2. When you see it add one 2 1/2 gal. jug.

Waiting for empty you end up with a little left over and a waste in the second jug. Unless you go to a truck stop and fill it up there.

I don't fill till it is way down, around 200 miles. Then it will just about take two of the 2.5 jugs.

Using the ford fill spout will prevent any leakage while filling and will not over fill it either.

Then rinse and seal the bag for the spout for reuse.

That is what I do.

I also don't fill fuel and def at the same time. Prevents a fubar in my eyes.

My 2015 was showing under 1/2 full so when I got to a truck stop (Flying J) using the DEF nozzle and filled it up, took 3.7 gal and the computer reset immediately. $2.80/ gal beats those jug prices and its easier. This is the 2nd time I have done this, truck has 10K on it.

Hi I'm like most others gave commented, I check system info everytime I fuel up to record hrs and if it says under half I well put a jug in within a 1000kms and the system resets as it should. Previous owner was my bro in law he did same thing, truck has 182000kms. I would rather Ave the extra distance og 1/2 a Def tank for it to reset, then 200 miles is cutting it close.

Almost always keep mine above half full. Last added some when it was warm in fall. Last week when it was warmer, topped off with 1.5 gallons.

Thanks folks. i will pick up some "new, blue, and improved DEF" now with genuine urea and available at my local DEF store.
I meant to do it today but my brain slipped out of gear after work.
If I remember correctly it goes into the larger hole, the one with the green cap. Or does it?????
Actually I have a large piece of pink duct tape over the DEF cap just as a reminder. I almost put some cetane booster into the DEF tank once!

It is rough getting old and I use all the reminders I can. The duct tape will have to do until they make a locking DEF cap. I also have to keep reminding myself that a GREEN pump does not necessarily mean DIESEL here in GA. If green is diesel it is a pure coincidence.

I stay away from BP stations for the color of the fill pumps because of that.
