New 6.7 vs 6.2. Question
Hi guys, New to the forums but I have been lurking for a while and have done a lot of reading and still cannot make up my mind.
I currently have four trucks for my business and am looking to replace one of them for a new one. I cannot make up my mind between the 6.7 and 6.2. I currently have a 7.3, 6.0, and two 5.4's. all superduties ranging between 99-06.
As soon as i think i have my mind made up between the two I change it.
Looking for a 2016 or 2017 F350 Crew cab short bed with a center console in magnetic or silver (company colors) XLT or Lariat whichever i find for a better deal first.
My dilemma is that if i go gas i have to order because i wont get one without the 4.30 gears. Diesel I could find on the lot for a much better price versus MSRP.
I like diesel a lot more but the only thing that concerns me is the game of Russian roulette you play with the fuel system. I know it is few and far inbetween but that is a huge chunk of change. Have there been any recent cases of this? How many actual cases have there actually been on here?
I personally love diesel trucks but i also love my gas trucks for peace of mind.
I tow every single day during the week except weekends for work. every day around 8k, and then up to 14k a couple times a week. I also plow in the winter at max GVWR because of an 1100 pound plow and salter full of salt.
What do you guys think?
I have always been a diehard diesel guy and my business has actually spent less money on my diesels than gas trucks, but now adays that is different with all the emissions and crap they put on these.
Resale is also something i have to consider, I will most likely be trading it in four or 5 years down the road, and diesels sell for about double what gas trucks do around here. Example; I was offered 4k for my 2006 f250 5.4 xlt SCSB and 9.5k for my 2005 f350 SCSB with less options on it. about the same mileage

Normally I'm a big pusher of gas, but if you're going up to 14k weekly I would say go 6.7 on this rig. Keep in mind you'll get a bigger discount on a diesel simply because of the invoice to MSRP markup. A good deal on the wrong truck isn't a good deal after all, though in this case, I vote diesel anyhow.

Order the new 2017 set up they way you want to maximize the truck to your needs and get gas.

Thank you guys so much! great site.
That is what I am hoping also. I know forums are where most go when problems arise, so the results online are usually skewed and not what the general population experiences. Still, when that gamble is a 12 THOUSAND dollar repair, it gets my attention.
I know the 6.2 is much better than the 5.4, but the 6.7 is also much better than the 6.0. so its about even. I still expect the resale between the 6.2 and 6.7 to be rather large
It will not be set in stone that I tow 14k every week, it could be every day for a week, and then not again for a couple weeks, all depends on when and what jobs come in. The 14k is going to be a dump trailer
See above post
Most towing is on rural roads 45-55 mph up and down hills, and then around town with lots of stopping and going and merging onto 50 mph roads with lots of traffic. On weekends i use it for towing a couple hours with toys in an enclosed trailer
I agree, I have never gotten a new truck before, and I feel I am going to get FOMO (Fear of missing out) if i get the 16 and then wish i waited for a 17. The question is if I will regret it more than the amount of money I save
Thats what I have noticed too. How common are the HPFP failures? has anyone had any luck getting it fixed? Any other common problems to be aware about?

First, if you are willing to get a 2017 then just wait and order one. Though it is not a big deal to me, but buying a 2016(I did) you are buying a new old body style. I once was a die hard diesel guy....now I'm more interested in reliability and simplicity and want a SD. The 6.2 makes an excellent plow choice too. Do you just tow around town, or long distances? While 14k regular towing would be at the top limit of my gas considerations, My opinion is:
Order the new 2017 set up they way you want to maximize the truck to your needs and get gas.

Just noticed that you have had both, How do you think they compare, and why did you go back to a gas engine?

I build houses with my friend, he has a 2014 6.7 and a 1996 F350 460. I have had to pick him up on the hwy twice in the last 12 months. Of course, while his truck was in the shop he drove his gas truck. No doubt, the power is sweet on the 6.7 compared to my 6.2 but it is not worth it to me anymore. For regular heavier hwy towing is where the diesel would be in play IMO. Shorter, town trips unless really pushing the towing capacities then no way. I tow equip. up to 12-14k and I wouldn't even consider a diesel for my needs. I'm rural back roads, a little 55mph hwy and town when I tow. After 20 years with diesel's I'm done.

I had mine from new to 25k miles. I only had a DEF warning problem where it didn't reset. My friends had a PCM replacement once and a wire harness problem once. Both left him on side of road. I do think the 6.7 has the fewest problems of new diesels, but they are just not for me anymore.

As for the 6.7 and HPFP, I admit I've only been driving a diesel since last April but have lurked on here for months before buying and after buying until finally joining in January. My 6.7 has never been back to the dealer, has never had a single hiccup, and following the 6.7 forum I don't remember reading anything about this as a recent problem. The only Ford diesel I would have even considered was the 7.3 prior to this, and would not fault anyone from shying away from a Ford diesel if they had owned one of the previous engines. But my opinion and experience is that the 6.7 has turned out to be a very reliable and strong, tough engine that in all likelihood will be a 300k engine with General maintenance. Not trying to talk you into anything, but don't dismiss the 6.7 based on previous Ford diesels.
