BTW, there is a problem with the number 98MWHO5289 You have a letter O, which is not used, also if that is a zero, there should be another number in front of it.

M is the engine code for the big 254 6 cylinder. WH is the code for F6 COE. 98 is what the 1950 trucks serial numbers start with, and the long number at the end is the consecutive unit number. Not a lot to know you probably already don't know. And to follow up with what Joe said, Ford didn't use I or O in any serial string so as not to be confused with 1 and 0. You may want to double check your number. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome!
Ok, the VIN is stamped on the passenger's side firewall (cowl) at the top. There should be two letters preceding the "98". Those two letters indicate which plant built the truck. In my case the two letters are "LB" which stands for Long Beach, CA.
The VIN plate is different. It will have the year code (two digits), engine code and cab type (M-engine, WH-COE),four or five digits of the run (serial number), and the two letter plant code.

9 = 1949-1950
8M = is the engine code for the 254 six
WH = F6 COE
The serial number has to be 6 digits and has to be above 375,000 because the 8M engine was not available until the 1950 model.
I still think he should post this in the correct thread.
