Gas to Diesel

I don't want to and really don't know how to convert my truck from gas to diesel. Are there any reputable companies that I could leave my truck with that can do the conversion?

1978 F100 short bed. 400 with a 4 speed

I promise I have used the search function and all I get is threads of owner/builder threads but am looking for someone else to convert it.

Either I convert or I sell the old girl..

Thank you guys

I swapped the 351 in my 79 F150 for a 6.9 idi diesel and it wasn't too bad. There are a few others who have done diesel swaps as well. As far as a shop that would do it, I'm sure there's some around that would, but keep in mind that it will probably be pretty expensive to have someone else do it.

Do you have any idea what kind of diesel engine you want to put into it? Old school with no real electronics, or newer technology?

51fordf5, I really don't know enough to have an answer for that. I would ride the tails of someone who blazed the road ahead of me.

HIO Silver, I was afraid it was expensive to do. I really don't have a minute of spare time and the skill to do this myself. I'm an aircraft mechanic not a truck mechanic. :-)

Skip, that is a real nice offer. lol But if you were ever in middle Tennessee for a month or so, we could knock it out. :-)

At this point I really think I'm just going to sell her. She's a good truck but all of my machines on the farm are diesel and I need the power from a diesel truck more than this truck. She'll end up a shop queen and I don't have time for that either.

Thank you very much for the responses.

I'm sure there's more than one diesel shop in TN that is capable of doing the swap. $ is the real question. To do the swap on your own without shopping around for parts and taking your time can cost around 6.5k. A good 6BT that has a lot of life in it with the properly built Transmission is usually found in a Dodge 3500 and not in a junk yard. So you're buying a well running truck and transplanting it's muscle into yours.
Now if you have the time and find a wrecked diesel truck say mid 90s 7.3ps or 5.9cummins you may get a deal. Or come across a 5.9 with a 4x4 NV Trans behind it you're almost good to go. Bring it to a hot rod shop or diesel shop any they should be able to do it for a few grand.
If they get all the parts you're looking at a markup on all parts.

Craigslist has 6BT from 1300$ to 4k it just depends on the seller. The engines are really well made. But if you have the cash I would love to see a built 6.0ps in a dent.

I too repaired aircraft.. Boeing P-3 Orions and MH-53 Sea Dragons while I was in the Navy. In concept, it's all the same... parts is parts.

And contrary to some opinions, I would not waste my time or money on an IDI or a PowerJoke... a 12-valve Cummins is the no brainer choice.. TONS of aftermarket support and no electronics.

Your time is "free". Hired help, as in a shop, ranges between $60 and $90 per manhour. Do the math.

Nice looking truck. Sell it. You want another hobby? A hobby you have to pay someone else to do? A gas to diesel conversion sounds pretty simple, but you always run into more than you think, and there is always a follow-on series of "fix its" associated with such a swap.

Yes, my glass half empty.

Good luck whichever way you go.

On edit: Never mind, read post 10.

This is not mine but you could always buy one completed.
1979 F250

I wouldn`t bother with swapping the cummins into a half ton truck anyway. At least start with a f.250.
