what exactly are you wanting to know?
some basics on the motor are
displacement is 300 cubic inches or 4.9L
I believe that it was introduced in 76
it was changed to fuel injection in 87
and it was discontinued in 96
I think theese years are right may be off a year on one or two though

well, the engine was actually first introduced way back in 65. (have an old ad to prove it). Everything else sounds about right, though.

Another couple of points is that the Ford 300-6 is one of the few motors ever designed to serve as a truck motor. I've always heard it has a longer stroke than car engines (how much is debatable) and its called straight six because the cylinders ar straight up and down, versus slanted like a V-8 motors cylinders are.

It is a straight six (or inline six) because the cylinders all line up as opposed to a V engine where the cylinders line up in two rows that come off the crankshaft in a V. Dodge had a slant six which was also an inline six, but instead of the cylinders pointing straight up they were 30 degrees (or so) to one side.

I just love that the 300 I6 is a pure truck engine--never seen a car engine bay in original factory production. However, it's little brother, the 240 inline six, did.

INLINE SIX POWER! TRUCK POWER! Roll out the torque!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!

You ever heard the saying "SIX IN A ROW is the way to go"? Straight, meaning six cylinders in line.

4" bore
3.98" stroke
anywhere between 8:1 and 8.7:1 compression
1bbl carb (ellusive 2bbl carb, never seen one or know anyone that has, though a friends father said he had one back in the day)
went to EFI in 87 as posted above
Ended in trucks in 97 (F250+ stayed old body style 1 year after the F150's changed and they offered the 300)
Complete production stopped in 1999 (and 2000 offered the leftovers iirc)
Was the base engine from F1's all the way up to F1000's (supposedly, only an F600 has been confirmed)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-May-02 AT 02:10 PM (EST)]Looks like this stock in a carburated 80-86 truck:

As you can see, it's 6 cyls, inline.
And, just for the heck of it, here's mine, with the header and stock intake, from the manifold side, with the body off of the truck: http://www.bigblocksix.com/f100swb/300wheaderwobody.jpg

The 300 straight six was a derivitive of the 240, originally the HD straight six used in things like the Falcon Econolines. Was that the 63.5 or 64 model year? My memory fails me. They are cousin to the 144/170/200/250 straight sixes used in the car lines for many MANY years. They're incredible engines hard to kill 'em if maintained even HALF properly. If you don't get 2 or 300,000 miles out of one, I'd call it a lemon.

Both the 240 and the 300 came out in 1965. They were both offered in the trucks and the 240 was available in the cars and vans as well. The only real way the 240/300 is related to the 144/170/200/250 is that they are inline sixes made by ford. Nothing exchanges.

I have had 400's, 351's, 302's, 360's, 2.9-V6 and currently a 300-6 and a 390. I LOVE the 300-6, it continues to impress and surprise me. I have 322,000 on mine and just went on a weeks vacation and used 1/2 quart of oil. In normal driving it uses 1 Quart of oil every oil change.

I have an Edmund's 1978 Vans, Pickups, Sport/Utility Buyer's Guide. Ford pickup listings in it include the following line:

Engine: 300 cu. in. 2 bbl 6 cylinder

But I have never seen one either.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jun-02 AT 11:07 AM (EST)]the 240/300 are both the same engines with minor differences. the stright 6 has all 6 pistions and cumbustion chmabers along the top in a row. there is one long valve cover opposed to 2 small ones for the V series.

the 300 6 came in 2 versons, light and heavy duty. they heavy duty has a stronger cam and pistions. the 300 6 has been used in everything including wood chipers and havy machinery to truck.

these engines last forever. 400 000k out of some and there still going strong all 300 6 came with 1 barrel carbs

Do you have any information regarding the difference in cams between the HD and SD? AFAIK the differences were:
1) Lack of emissions equipment
2) Different exhaust (possibly intake?) manifolds
3) Forged Pistons
4) Rare Forged Crank
5) Low compression (8:1 instead of the 8.4-8.7:1)
