Big truck guys.......insurance?

Hit a bit of a roadblock on the COE ....I called my insurance co to add it to my policy, they said no! Seems they will only insure up to 1 ton trucks for personal use. They offered me a commercial policy at about 3 times as much as any of my other vehicles. So I started calling around and finally found a company that would insure it, but the premiums are still fairly steep.
I could use collector insurance, but I plan to actually use this as a truck....haul stuff, pull a trailer, daily driver, etc.
Has anybody else ran into this? Suggestions?

BTW, the truck is registered as a C6(2 ton)

I would register it as a 1 ton, problem solved. I have a GMC 3500 1 ton I used for years hauling trailers and stuff, why would you need a two ton truck?

Register it as a farm vehicle. Really cheap. Your chassis is a 1-ton, isn't it? May be worth getting it retitled as a Special Construction or rebuilt with a 1-ton GVW.

That's what I have been trying......finally got State Farm to give me a quote. seems a bit much to me, but I may have to bite the bullet. Re-titling would be a last resort. I tried to register it as a 1 ton, but cant without jumping through all the DMV hoops to get a new title.

I would imagine Montana is similar to Iowa in that a registered Farm vehicle is limited in some ways as to when and where it can be operated? Otherwise everyone would register as one. Or am I missing something?

It's the same in Kentucky. If you license a vehicle fraudulently as a farm truck, it's tax fraud.

Maybe he has a farm, I dunno. Just sayin' "register as a farm truck" isn't as simple as it might sound to others.

Yup, they basically told me it could only be classed as a farm vehicle if it was only operated on my property and/or very limited use.
I don't want a bunch of restrictions.....

I do have a farm, and I have done the farm vehicle thing in the past....seems like they have changed the rules a bit now though.

I'm curious, are they basing the rate on the licensed GVW? Or just the model?
Even though you want to haul things are your really going to put a lot of miles on it?
Depending on how much farm stuff you insure if you put the truck as part of a blanket policy for all the farm equipment buildings etc. and don't license it for 32,000# or what ever the max is there for two axles it seems like you should be able to get some sort of break.
But then insurance is getting tougher all around. I hope you come up with something that will let you enjoy using your COE.

Scott I had to rent a commercial truck for towing when the woman hit my trailer and ran it into my truck. It seems rental places dont allow towing with their trucks. when time for insurance came my F250 insurance had to be supplemented to cover the commercial F250 . I know other companies dont have personal truck limitations because my friend has military 2.5 tons. I would just call around till you find one.

If you have a collector vehicle insured with Grundy you can add daily drivers.

(2 ton)
Sounds to me like you intend to use the truck as trucks are intended. If you are completely honest with the insurance company, they will most likely rate your truck accordingly. Liability insurance coverage is something I would not want my insurance company to be able to walk away from after a claim if they could suggest I obtained insurance by fraud.
I have my F4 insured at collector vehicle rate through SF. I also have two DDs and all my other insurance through SF.
Collector insurance is just that, limited and with specific uses.

Exactly. I could have just told them it was a 1 ton, no problem. But in the event of a claim, I would be left holding the bag once they discovered the discrepancy. I'm not just trying to meet the legal requirement, I also want to be covered.

Oldb, they go by the GVW, in this case 16000(the minimum). Titling the truck as an F6 was easier at the time, I never thought it might be a problem.
