It's not hard to check the turbo. Yank the intake tubes off down to the turbo and reach in and wiggle, push, and pull on the fan, it's right there. The word is that a hair of in and out is not a problem but any slop up and down is. If it's sucking the filter in that tells me it's working fine, it is supposed to suck more air in and push it into the engine.

He probably should get rid of that stock air box. Do as walleye says and check the blades of the turbo, up and down movement, and end play.

Rebuild kits are cheap and easy to install, I wouldn't go any other route as long as the wheels are in good shape.

As Walleye Hunter has stated, the best route to go is to rebuild the stock one if possible.

If not, the next least expensive route is to find a rebuildable e99 turbo in a salvage yard.

Next, these guys are working on a e99 compatible replacement that will peform closer to a 38R than stock:

I have heard good things about their current turbos.

The next big question is how are the up pipes on the truck at the exhaust manifolds and the collector behind the turbo?

I'm sure his up pipes are leaking. Hows he like the noise in that filter set up. I wouldn't think he would. I go for rebuilding his stock turbo, it's easy and the kits are cheap enough.

It would be a miracle if they aren't leaking and that begs the question: What to do if they are?

I agree, the 6637 was too LOUD for me just riding around. Towing with one for 6-8 hours wears me and my ears out or add some mountains and it was pure misery unless I wore ear plugs which I am not fond of doing.
