1978 460 external to internal regulated alternator question

Hey guys I have a 1970 ford f100 I put a 1978 460 out of an rv. It has a externally regulated alternator. I'm looking to put in a internally regulated alternator. Which years came with a internally regulated alternator that will bolt right up? Or do I need to buy after market?
thanks guys

No need to go aftermarket. Grab a 130-amp 3G alternator from the salvage yard after reading the 3G retrofit thread linked in the Tech Info Compilation. It's the best $50 I ever spent for an charging system.

What years came with 130 3g alternator, and will only an alternator off a 460 work?

Basically:
  • Red/ Green (or Green/ Red) from the alt to the red/green in the factory harness.
  • Take the old large gauge Black/ Yellow and tie it into the + side of the solenoid.
  • Yellow/ White to large power stud on alt.
  • Alt power wire to + side of solenoid with 175 amp MEGAfuse.
  • Done! Drink a beer.

Detailed info in the Tech Info Compilation... Please use it!

And your factory amp meter gauge will not work correctly or maybe not at all? I think I remember that statement being correct?

There is a guy off the web that does some kind of work/conversion to them to make it work with the 3 G upgrade.

PA Performance has a modified VR that allows retention of the ammeter.

And here it is: 1G-3G Conversion (462802C) - PA Performance.com

3g 90amp alternators are a decent upgrade as well. Don't always have to jump to 130amp... although that's what I did Lucked out and found a '96 truck with 130amp.

edit: The wiring requirements of the 90amp will be a smaller gauge wire than the 130amp, might be able to engineer a setup that uses the original ammeter.
