1950 ford f1 rewire

Today my dad and I tackled rewiring the old truck. Picked up a new harness from sacremento vintage along with the turn signal kit and all the appropriate pigtails and crossovers. Added an old signal stat 900 and spliced/soldered the correct cloth colored wire to make it plug and play with the harness. Everything works perfectly. Tomorrow we will alter the parking lights to dual filament and tuck the signal harness away a little neater. We had to pull the led's to get the signal stay to work but honestly with new wiring the tail lights are a lot brighter using standard bulbs and I think they will work just fine. While we had every thing in the dash out we cleaned the instrument cluster thoroughly and put in an original choke cable.

Nice! Can you get solid-state flashers in 6V? They'll do LEDs.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to install a stock type harness also. I like the look, simplicity and I don't have any additional circuits anyway. Good job, it looks great.

How difficult was it to add the turn signal switch to the harness? I've got a Signal-Stat 800. I'm sure I could do it. Just need to take a look at the schematic. I also want to do the dual filament parking lights. I have everything on hand except for the parking lights.

It wasn't that difficult. Sacramento vintage ford makes a nice signal harness that has the front lamp runs, taillight circuit, and flasher. The front runs flow with the engine harness and their front crossover is nice as it has signals and headlights combined. I just mapped the signal stat 900 wiring out and then spliced in the correct cloth covered wire to match the new harness where it connected. It makes my signal stat look like it came with harness. It did take both of us 12 hours today though. But part of that was cleaning all of the connections, all of the switches, a good cleaning on the gauge cluster, and installing an original choke cable. All the splices and bullets I added were soldered and shrink wrapped. The worst part was attaching the main harness to the panel and gauges.

I'll have to check out that signal harness. Thanks.

It's interesting that all of my accessories are working better with new wire. The radio is actually loud now even though it's am and like I said before my tail lights are really bright.

The last step is installing dual filament sockets and bulbs in the parking light housings. Any tips on the best way to do this?

I finished the turn signal project tonight. Pressed the original parking light sockets out with a few light taps with a mallet and pressed the dual filament tail light sockets into the housing. Installed 1154 bulbs and done. Works great and looks 100% original.

Good job. Nothing like new wires to make your truck feel solid. I have all LED's. You just need to change the flasher for the signals to work.

So I have been using the signal stat for a few weeks now. It works great and I have no issues with it. But last week I had the opportunity to pick up an original sxts ford unit. The wiring was old so I cut it out and soldered in new wiring yesterday.

It works great and matches the old patina of the wheel and shifter better I think. It even came with the column trim. I need to do a little tidy work and add a little loom but here is a pic installed.

It's made to work with a cancelling cam I think. Has anyone tried that on these units in the 50 or 51 ford trucks?

There was a self-cancelling unit on mine. Unfortunately, it self destructed one day. Until that point, it worked great but being a 4 wire, it wouldn't have supported dual filament bulbs.

How could it self-cancel? Do you mean it shut off based on time, not on rotation of the steering wheel?

Ross, the top of the unit has tabs that come out depending on which way you move the lever. It has to be something self cancelling that would/could mount below the steering wheel. Will take pics tonight to paint the picture for you.

Mine was based on column rotation.
