Basic troubleshooting 101 - take everything you can out of the equasion. Grab a gas can, fill it with diesel, tie it to the front bumper, Run a piece of fuel line from the bottom of it to the input on your transfer pump(lower passenger's side of the engine); effectively bypass the entire tank system.
If it still is doing it, your problem is transfer pump, or filter related most likely.
If not, well, you know how to backtrack from there.

you could use a squeeze bulb with check valve from a boat to prime the system using Macrobb's idea too. I have one installed inline from my tank before the mechanical fuel pump. It has helped while I have been working on her to keep the system primed better while troubleshooting. Someone on here gave me the idea and it works great.

Does it start and then die, or cuts out driving down the road?

It will crank.. Idle fine but get going down the road it will sputter, sometimes gets a great boost of power, and eventually dies.. Usually going up a hill or around a corner.. After I get it back to house I can let it idle for 5 mins ( idleing fine) then it will be starving for fuel and die. I don't think it's pulling from back tank cause its practically dry as a bone and the pick up tube fell off so there's no way I think it can get fuel from back tank

Has to be sucking air from somewhere im guessing. Question is why is it worse going down the road? I would replace the o-rings in the fuel lines coming off the tank, going to and from the tank valve, and any rubber bits before the lift pump. Clear plastic hose coming out of lift pump wouldnt be a bad idea. Granted before you jump into all of that, you can try the fuel can trick.
Could be a bad IP and something to do with getting warm, hard to say.
