If the tube was gone it had to go somewhere. Some of those pieces could have ended up in a fuel line or still in the tank causing your problems.

Basic troubleshooting 101 - take everything you can out of the equasion. Grab a gas can, fill it with diesel, tie it to the front bumper, Run a piece of fuel line from the bottom of it to the input on your transfer pump(lower passenger's side of the engine); effectively bypass the entire tank system.

If it still is doing it, your problem is transfer pump, or filter related most likely.
If not, well, you know how to backtrack from there.

you could use a squeeze bulb with check valve from a boat to prime the system using Macrobb's idea too. I have one installed inline from my tank before the mechanical fuel pump. It has helped while I have been working on her to keep the system primed better while troubleshooting. Someone on here gave me the idea and it works great.Name: bulb.JPG

Holy smokes, is that rust? Damn my 65 Wildcat and 69 Fairlane both look better than that.

Everything fuel related has been replaced.. Injectors. Return line. Injection pump. Mechanical fuel pump. And cleaned all the old pick up tube out of the tank. Only thing that ain't new is selector valve. Maybe it's clogged or sonething. Is there a way I can test it?

It can get stuck and not switch fully over to say the rear tank. Usually this just causes the rear to run empty fast and partially refill the front.

Does it start and then die, or cuts out driving down the road?

I only cleaned the front tank out. Not the back and yes I have it on the front tank while driving it.. If it was pulling air it would idle rough, right? It only stalls going down the road and idling for a long period of time.

Do you have to wait to restart it, or will it start back up?

It will crank.. Idle fine but get going down the road it will sputter, sometimes gets a great boost of power, and eventually dies.. Usually going up a hill or around a corner.. After I get it back to house I can let it idle for 5 mins ( idleing fine) then it will be starving for fuel and die. I don't think it's pulling from back tank cause its practically dry as a bone and the pick up tube fell off so there's no way I think it can get fuel from back tank

Has to be sucking air from somewhere im guessing. Question is why is it worse going down the road? I would replace the o-rings in the fuel lines coming off the tank, going to and from the tank valve, and any rubber bits before the lift pump. Clear plastic hose coming out of lift pump wouldnt be a bad idea. Granted before you jump into all of that, you can try the fuel can trick.
Could be a bad IP and something to do with getting warm, hard to say.

I do have a leaky injector think has a bad o ring cause its tight.. But if that was the problem it would idle rough from the start. I'll pull the other tank clean and top off both tanks to be certain I have fuel.. Replace all lines with new rubber hose and go from there. Speaking of while I was working on front tank I noticed the tank selector valve had fuel on it.. Maybe leaking? But I may have splashed fuel up on it while removing and siphoning front tank.. I need to look at a little more closer
