Programming a spare PATS key

2000 F150 XLT 4X4 4.6 Scab
I bought my truck with only one key. Recently I bought a spare on eBay and had it cut at a hardware store. I need to program the spare key. How do I do this? I've found a few different instructions on the internet. I tried a couple of methods and they didn't work. Can anyone give me a procedure to do? Or do I have to go to the dealer? Thanks.

You can only program extra pats keys if you have 2 different keys already programed to the truck. If you only have one, then you have to go to the dealer or a good locksmith and have it done. The only other option is to have your key cloned at the hardware store or big box stores.

page 90 in your operators manual says you need TWO programmed keys to program your THIRD key. If you don't have 2 working keys, you need to go to the dealer and they will program the key for you with their computer... cost will be about $100.

Wow, I checked with a local dealer. They charge $42 for a new key and to have it programmed. That's a lot less than I thought. So if I bring them my key, it'll be less than that.

This is not entirely correct. Depending on the version of the PATS System, it can require one or two keys. For example, my 97 Expy's owners manual says TWO keys, but the official Ford PATS Job Aid states it only need ONE for the Type A PATS System my truck has.

99+ is Type C and requires TWO keys. Programming instruction are on Page 2

Well, it is 100% correct. Your post even states why.
OP stated in the first sentence that it is a 2000. A 2000 requires 2 keys. kd4gij is correct.

If no year was stated, then that post would not be "entirely correct" and your post would apply.

Very astute observation blupupher, Icefan will need TWO keys as all agreed on. My intention was to point out even an owners manual can have incorrect information such as in my case. This is why I provided a link to the correct information. I'm still a bit new to the PATS system overall, but do the other cars with Type A PATS also state two keys in their owners manuals?

Seems like a good idea to see how many keys are programmed into the PATS system, especially if one bought the vehicle used. I wouldn't want a spare key to my truck just floating around as Murphy's Law happens everyday. It would MAJORLY suck to have your truck stolen with a lost/found key from a previous owner.

The moral here: If in doubt, find out.

I think if you compare the shape of the plastic cover on the key, you will see the major difference in the two models.
---------------guess that's not right.. My 2002 key looks just like the 1998 key......... Its the 2010 EDGE that looks different.. But the 2002 takes two keys.
