Building a 360 for cheap(ish)?
Hi there, I'm trying to figure out what to do for the engine in my 47, I'm trying to build it into a gasser class truck, and some gasser class rules require cast iron heads. Anyway I want to change the valvetrain and the intake manifold (currently a 2bbl) any other suggestions? Thanks.

360 and Gasser are mutually exclusive terms.
The 360 is built with pistons .120 down the hole. You will never get real FE performance out of one.
You need a 390 crank and rods. If your 360 pistons are in spec, you can re-use them for a motor in the mid 9s, maybe better if you have flat tops.
FE heads flow fine all things considered. It's the exhaust manifolds that cork it all up. Once you get headers and more intake and start spinning over 4500 rpms, you can worry about the heads.
There is nothing cheap about making a performance motor. You can make a cheap 360 but it will leave most of the performance on the table.

thanks, i do plan on building a bigger better motor later in life but being in high school I can't really afford a 427. I'm not so much looking for the thing to be really fast, just enough so i Don't look like a fool if i decide to go to the drag strip.
I found the engine tag underneath the starter coil the other day, it says 360, 68, 2, i know what this means, but then it says 8 B 300, what does that mean?
also are the stock 4bbl intakes any good? I know they're pretty cheap, but there heavy too.

As Dirty Harry once asked, "May I make a suggestion?"
Forget the low power, expensive to work on, heavy, big, expensive to work on, low power 360.
Sell it.
Buy a Mustang 302 with an AOD transmission.
Your '47 is a flyweight truck by today's standards. A decent 302--hell, the worst 302 ever made will overpower the stock suspension, steering and brakes.
The 302 is easy to work on, and parts are plentiful and cheap. Plus it's close to 200 lbs less of ugly dangerous cast iron to deal with.
Think about it....

thanks guys, I almost did put a 302 in it a couple of times but, I really don't want to. I don't know why, It just doesn't seem right to me I guess. As I said before too, I plan on building up a different motor when I get the money maybe a 390 or a 427 or something, if I go with the fe the other motor will drop right in.
Maybe I'm being stupid though.
