As a kid 45 years ago I never never got caught by my dad but a couple of times, well more than that, that's how we used to leave looped rubber marks on the road. Throw it into reverse and hit the gas! Loops every time and lots of tire smoke. He never noticed the rubber spattered on the fenders! BAD...VERY BAD!!!!

A few years back I was driving my friend's automatic Jeep Cherokee (with floor shifter) and I had been driving manuals exclusively for several years. We were cruising along at about 70 and came up to a hill. By habit I went to downshift. I buried the brake pedal and shifted into reverse simultaneously. I don't think I've ever stopped so fast. We were sure the tranny was done for. It ended up being fine and lasting several more years before he sold it. The rear driveshaft did twist ever so slightly though.

Dang I thought I tried it all when I was a teenager. Next junk vehicle I have with an automatic, I'm trying that before it goes to the scrap yard!

1970 Camaro, 307/Powerglide. Reverse at about a hundred & something while playing with the basket (handle) shifter. It stalled after leaving a nice loooong pair of marks. Month later the pan was level full with gears & metal.

Doesn't anyone remember the GM/Pontiac commercials from the late 80's/early 90's where they have some FWD car at WOT and they are thrashing it from F to R to F to R and saying how great their cars are?

A couple friends and I would do J burnouts (put it in reverse, mash it, slam it into drive) in a early 90s dodge caravan....it eventually resulted in a hole in the side of the transmission. I also did reverse 180s (put it in reverse, mash it, cut the wheel, slam it into drive) in my 94 Eagle Talon but it never had any issues, granted the minivan got abused much more than the talon.

Since we are all sharing trans killing story's here is my own. Playing around in a foot deep of snow in the driveway and got my Nissan car stuck bad with snow tires, so I started jamming from drive to reverse at wot and that worked good. All at once it started to act like it had no power and went to get it unstuck with one more slam and call it. All I heard was a bang and the already screwed up exhaust break at the same time. Needless to say that car no longer moves under its own power.

Still wanting to fix it and finish it off in the local derby this year.
