Wheel and Tire Questions
I'm trying to help my son buy some new tires for his 2001 F250 V10 with 6" lift. His current wheels are 35 x 12.5 x 16.5" w/BFG A/T and he likes the look of that. They stick out about an inch out of the wheel well. 16.5" tire selection is very limited, so we are looking at new 17 x 9 wheels. That's where we are having the problem. I don't know much about the backspace and offset dimensions needed to give him the same look that he wants.
I read a few threads and I think a -12mm offset with 4.65 back space might be right, but in all honesty, I don't really know what that means, and I don't know what the current wheel specs are.
Can anyone school me on wheel measurements and what tire would work into the whole equation? 17x9wheels(8-170) with 35x12.5x17 sound about right?

If you have 9" wide wheels now then just measure the back space and off set and order the same in the 17's.
Where this all changes is when you go with different width wheels. This a link to an article on the subject. Wheel Backspacing And Offset - Wheel Etiquette - Four Wheeler Magazine That should help a bit.

Could always save a fortune and run Military surplus tires (36" or 37"). They take a 16.5" wheel, and can get a set shipped for around $700 IIRC (Granted, I haven't checked in a bit).
I've been running the 37s on my last couple of trucks, they hold up great.
If you go the larger wheel route, should be able to pull a wheel off, use a straight edge on the inner lip and measure to the mounting surface
Here's a random pic from the web:
