VIN code '5' is a 5.4L 3-valve engine. VIN code 'L' is a 5.4L 2-valve engine. If the question is whether or not the bottom engine of the two engines are identical, it MAY be depending on what year and model of vehicle the intended donor engine is, versus the intended vehicle to be swapped into. If you can obtain the full 17 digit VINs of both vehicles I will be able to tell you for sure.

I know the 2 valve has the oil filter in the back. I very seriously doubt it will fit.

This is untrue. Oil filter location is dependent upon the oil filter adapter bolted to the engine. If the donor engine happened to have the oil filter located rearward of the driver side engine mount as described (such as on E-Series applications), changing its location is only a matter of bolting on the appropriate filter adapter to suit the application intended.

whatever. you tell me when the oil filter is all the way back on the engine, and then the other engine has the oil filter on the left front. I worked on the one truck, and I own the other one. and both trucks have the 2 valve 5.4s. I don't believe you block off one and move the filter.....to the front. and this was 2 different trucks. not a van.

I am a Ford dealer technician who has removed and replaced more than his fair share of 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L V10 engines working for various Ford dealers since 2000, and I can tell you on ALL of those engines use an oil filter adapter that bolts to the left/front of the engine with coolant and oil passing through it. Again, oil filter location on various vehicles is dependent on which style of oil filter adapter is used to suit the intended specific application. Once you strip these engines all down to short block, they all look pretty much identical with the only minor difference being the aluminum blocks use two knock sensors instead of one on the cast iron blocks.
