1948 Ford F1 - Volare front - SBC - Header question

Hey there, This question is for those running a SBC with a volare front end.

What Header are you using?

Are there any exhaust systems off other trucks or cars that fit fairly close?
any help is greatly appreciated.

Looking for Junkyard parts if possible.

The stock sbc ram's horn manifolds should work.

I have a Volare with a SBC in my 56. I used a set of stainless headers from e-bay. They were only $110. The clearance between the header and power steering line is pretty tight. The engine mounts may need to be offset to the right an inch or so.

I offset my engine one inch to the passenger side and used stock SBC ram's horn manifolds. Worked well...

Thanks guys. I already have the stock manifolds and they look like poo. Knowing that the $110 manifolds fit with tight, I'm going to try to see what I can find.

What about the exhaust? Did you guys run custom down pipes? Would love chop a set off something in the yard considering I don't have anything to bend the pipes and want to try to make an exhaust myself from decent exhaust pieces I can find.

I made my own exhaust. Fortunately, I had the down pipes so the rest of it was pretty easy. I ran the exhaust out in front of the rear wheels and put a bologna cut on the tailpipe where it exited from under the running board. I used turbo mufflers and the sound was about right for me...not too loud and not too soft.

Honestly, I would never waste my time and effort trying to make an exhaust system from used pipe. Exhausts deteriorate from the inside out, so it's near impossible to determine the condition of used pipes. and welding heat and internal roughness will make it much more likely to accelerate rust, welding gas tite seams on new pipe is difficult enough, welding on used corroded, aluminum coated pipe is an exercise in masochism. Almost every muffler shop has a bender these days and bend most all their pipes rather than stocking all the prebent pipes so they are good at it and it's a lot less expensive than most imagine, even for stainless pipe since they do it all the time. I suggest calling some shops around you, including chains like Meineke before investing your time and effort.

The exhaust shops out here want anywhere from 800-1500 for a complete custom exhaust.

Sometimes you get lucky and find an old Gbody or K5 blazer or something that someone already has invested the time into, which is what I would be looking for.

I had to look at your profile to see you are in BC, shops there must not have any competition, or you are going to the wrong shops. here a bent to fit downpipe and/or tailpipe is not considered to be a "custom" job, it's what about every muffler shop does every day, on every car that comes in and their prices have to be competitive with the price of a prebent pipe at the big box auto parts stores.

I had a full exhaust system from the headers back exiting behind the rear wheels installed last September for $300.00 although I did supply the mufflers . They thought the old girl was cool and had a blast test driving her . Like Axe said you need to shop around

its funny you say this because from the 3 muffler shops around me, all of them will tell you to go buy the pre bent pipe out of the box, and they will install it for me because its cheaper. or they're all a bunch of lazy ________

im going to see what I can find on the local craigslist, and maybe I can find something that will work and bolt right on, and can share my findings.

Except for the used down pipes which were in very good condition, I got all my exhaust tubing from my local O'Reilly's Auto store. I think the total exhaust system cost me less than $100 including the mufflers...
