Question 2016 F250 Crewcab 4x4 w 6.2L - Which rear for towing?

I am seriously considering selling my 2005 F250 CC 4x4 6.0L diesel and replacing it with a 2016 F250 CC 4x4 with the 6.2L. I pull a 6000 lb pound trailer long distance through some fairly hilly terrain. Which rear would you recommend for towing a trailer of this weight and why? Also, my research here implies that I could expect about 11 mpg pulling the trailer with the 4.30 gearing and this isn't so bad because this is what I currently get with the 6.0L diesel. Is 11 mpg realistic with the 6.2L in a 4x4 crewcab with the 4.30 rears? Thanks.

I would go with the 4.30 gears, last summer I pulled my inclosed trailer helping a friend move and I averaged around 11. The trailer weighed 7 to 8K when loaded and made about the same mileage unloaded, it's more about wind resistance when you are pulling a box on the flat than the weight.

I took the advice here and ordered my 16 SD with the 4.30's, everything that everyone here said was 100% correct. I tow right around 6K and more of my towing is in the higher elevations which gives me a avg of 10.2mpg, running empty I'm up to 13.8 mpg @ 70mph.

Sorry about a little bit of hijacking...I have a 250 with the 6.2 and 3.73 rear end. At 70 I'm taching 1.8k roughly, with 4.30's I'd be over 2000 RPM. If I lock out 6th,wouldn't be the same as 4.30's? If I'm towing large it might be usefull starting out.
Just a question folks...I'm not towing more than 8K.

The rear end is a torque multiplier so you will never have the same mechanical advantage with the 3.73 that you have with the 4.30 gears.

An example would be a 10 to 1 multiplier would take 100 ft lbs to torque a bolt to 1000 lbs but a 5 to 1 would take 200 lbs to do the same thing. It's all in mechanical advantage.

tire/wheel size,,, final drive gear ratios... then transmission ratios...

why do you think some bigger Trucks have 2 speed rear ends...

think of a tight/rusted bolt.. and using a 6 inch wrench.. then a 12 inch wrench..
same turning an axle...
so transmission can not make up the leverage.. it can help some... but not completely

I've been getting 10-11 mpg towing our 8000# 5th wheel on the flat, less into headwinds. Hills drop things to 8-10 mpg range.

I just changed my rear ends in 2011 6.2 from 3.73 to 4.30. Best thing i've done. Shifts better and it sure does feel quite torquey now as compared to before.

Thanks for explaining the 4.30 vs 3.73's! That was a pretty easy to understand explanation.

I got the 3.73 gears on mine. I will probably never tow over 10k. I can get 16mpg on the highway with this set up. Plenty of power. Especially with a 6 speed tranny.

I pull a 10,000lb 5th wheel in New England with absolutely no problem.
