1994 F600 Horse Van

Hey all- I'm new here, so I apologize if this is a redundant topic, or if this is the wrong place to post about this particular vehicle.

I am a horse owner, and I have been casually looking for a rig to haul my horses. A friend of a friend is selling a 1994 F600 horse van. It's got a 7.0L gasoline engine with 146k miles on it. The seller always had maintenance done by a reputable mechanic, so I assume that it is as sound as it could be for being 22 years old. The starter and breaks are new. I have been searching the internet for opinions on the F600, particularly with the aforementioned specs, but I haven't found anything.

It sounds like a good deal, and it would save me the hassle of doing trailer math and fussing about weight distribution hitches or gooseneck hitches. But are these trucks reliable? Are they a pain to maintain? How many more miles could I expect out of the engine?

Welcome to FTE.

It is really impossible to say how reliabe that truck would be, but F600s in general are very sturdy, reliable trucks.

If you post the VIN and the warranty/data plate info (on drivers door near latch) you can get the particulars of the axles, and other info.

Does this have hydraulic brakes, with a yellow handled parking brake? If so, it probably has Lucas-Girling brakes. Not bad brakes, but somewhat expensive to fiddle with. But if you have new brakes, not to worry.

The 7.0 or 429 motor will last a long time. Exhaust manifolds tend to crack when they get old. Sometimes carb and governor issues come up.

What transmission?

It will be thirsty, and compared to even an F350 sized pickup, it will be painful to have work done on this truck. Tires alone can bankrupt you. Make sure it has tubeless tires, probably 9 R 22.5s.

It's got an automatic Allison transmission. Here is a link to the add.

I don't want to ask a too many questions right now and get the seller's hopes up. She has been trying to sell it for a while. Its a monstrosity and I expect work on it to be pricey, but I'm hoping that if I use it mostly around town once or twice a month, it won't need repairs too quickly. Is that a reasonable expectation, or an I too optimistic?

Looks good.

If there are service records, the fluids including transmission are clean, it starts, idles and runs ok, it shifts ok, it stops ok, then buy it.

Good luck with it!

Oh, I forgot "turns ok".
