Strong smell of diesel in exhaust.

Stock engine. I have noticed that after I installed the led mod to the glow plugs if I let the relay time out there will be enough white smoke to fill up my shop. There is a real real strong diesel smell. Also when it does crank it will clear up and there will be no visible smoke, but enough diesel fumes coming out the exhaust to burn your eyes. After running around town and stopping at a red light the fumes can be smelled after sitting there for a few seconds. What should I be looking at to solve this? Fuel mileage is still 14-15 miles per gallon.

I'd first remove it, it's easy, and see if it still dose it. Mitt be something else that just came up. When driving around and warm you should have this, so makes me think some else is up.

Ok let me try to clarify. I know the led has nothing to do with it. I have had the odor since I got the truck 6 months ago. After installing the led I was trying to get in a habit of letting it time out approximately 2 min before attempting to crank the truck. The affects of this procedure has been a lot of white smoke and very strong diesel odor. It is as if the cylinders are loading up with a huge amount of diesel during that wait to start period and when I try to crank it it all comes out the exaust as raw diesel. Where would I start to look into fixing this. I do have AE.

Normally the glow plugs go out after a minute, maybe that explains the more than normal white smoke at start up.

well I have not timed it. The glow plug system is working correctly. I just discovered what I think is a hint at the problem. Shouldn't matter how long I let the wait to start cycle last. Shouldn't smell and smoke like that. I want to fix it but need a starting point.

Injectors won't fire off without the motor turning. Is is just in the exhaust or can you smell it under the hood? If it's in the exhaust, I think your injector(s) are leaking internally through the nozzle. It would be impossible to tell which ones without pulling them and bench testing them. Just to be sure, I would check under the hood smell around, smell the oil and coolant. If it's still in the exhaust, I think it's bad injectors.

Hey Scott,
Its been unusually cold down here at night. Try cycling your glow plugs a couple times than start the truck.

It cranks ok but if I let the glow plugs time out it smokes worse than waiting say 30 seconds and firming it up. If I let it cycle thru twice I expect smoke would be worse. Maybe even hydro locking.

Your not getting it fuel can't be injected into the cylinder without the engine running, the injectors are oil actuated the only way fuel can get into the cylinder with out running is if the injector itself is worn out. Are you sure your glow plugs are to par?

Scott,
Have you tried plugging in the truck a few hours before you try to start it?

Z31freakify I see what your saying. What about o rings? Deluxe06 No issues with it cranking just a lot of smoke and smell more if I let glow plugs time out. Runs fine idles fine. Trucks got 140,000 miles on it,but is 13 years old. Something is worn out I am thinking.

Sounds like split nozzle or something. He said he could drive till warm and it still smells bad. To me that's raw fuel in the cyclinders or cyclinder that can't be burnt. You either have to pull them all and have them checked or maybe unplug one at a time drive it or let it run for a while and see if it clears up with that one unplugged. Me I'd pull them all one at a time and you mitt just find out which one it is, you mitt even find more then one that is bad.

If the injector is cracked it might be possible to pull the glow plugs and cycle the key to run the fuel pump to build pressure and maybe look for fuel or atleast a wet piston. Never done it but it sounds feasible.

Are you positive its diesel you are smelling? My truck always smells bad in the winter month's because of the different blend of fuel that is sold in the winter. Just a idea. Hope you find your problem.

Diesel smell for sure. Been doing it since I got truck in June. The idea of looking thru the glow plug hole to check for a wet piston sounds like a good idea. Any opinions on this?
