Oops, sorry about the

You sure that's not a starter issue? Sticking solenoid? Stuck relay? Wiring issue at the starter (cross between starter motor and solenoid wires)?

Or is it a case of the starter motor stops turning, but the bendix/gear remains extended?

this is what I found out--even with the Bendix all the way in -(and it does go in )
it still hit the gear ring---
so I shimmed it with 2 washers between starter and bell housing
on my --IDI- the starter has three bolting points-- this powerstroke-- only has two
sowwwww- when I shimed it the first time-- starter was not straight--- the second time I had to put 2 washers between starter and housing were a third bolt whould be--
started fine no more grinding------- did ford try to save money---one bolt at a time

The 2 bolt starter is for a superduty, but will work on the OBS. The OBS trucks left the factory with a 3 bolt starter.

Are the two bolts you put in opposite one another by 180 degrees? Or did you just put in two bolts 90 degrees apart? Does the starter itself have three mounting holes?

NO, I didn't have to shim it. I got my starter from NAPA and it works good.

There should be no need to shim the starter. You didn't put the flexplate on backwards did you????

^^^^ Isn't there also a spacer in the mix there somewhere, with an auto? Wonder if parts got reinstalled in the wrong order.

The spacer is 1" thick. It usually stays stuck to the end of the crank shaft when the flexplate comes off.
