95 5.8 engine questions.

I have a 95 F250 with the 5.8 EFI engine. It has a tick in the engine that sounds like a lifter to me but another guy said he thought it was a piston skirt. How can I tell the difference? Also, I know where a 91 F250 is that has the 5.8. The 95 should have a roller cam and the 91 doesnt. the 95 has rebuilt heads on it so I am thinking about building a short block and using the 95 heads. Will they work on a non roller short block and will a non roller engine work in place of the engine with the roller cam?

I think the 95 E7s will still work on your 91 block since its flat tappet still but it won't get as much lift/power as the 95 block. Not sure if you can put that 95 cam into the 91 block and it work the same.

If your going to build it up why don't you stick with the 95 roller block and rebuild it vs the 91. I am also not sure if the 95 has a camshaft sensor or something the 91 block does not since they are for different gen trucks.

I was going to build the short block and be ready to change it out with out losing the use of my truck while the bottom end is being built.

Wait and find a lower roller block. It will pay off in the end I would think. Might just be me.

keep in mind that these engines are known for developing an exhaust manifold leak that results in "exhaust tick". had me worried when i first got the truck but over 3 years later it's still "ticking" away with no difference.

It would be hard to tell the difference between a lifter tick and piston slap but these Fords aren't known for a piston slap problem so that's not likely, the likely cause is an exhaust leak either directly at the exhaust manifold or in the air injection plumbing behind the engine.

Take a piece of garden hose or something similar and listen around manifolds like Conanski said.

I've gotten rid off ticks in engines before using kerosene
drain a quart of oil and put a quart of kersone in and run for about 10-15 minutes then drain and change with filter.do at your own risk though could possibly plug up pick up screen.

ticking noise

The tick is louder when cold. It can be heard at idle but when it warms up it quietens down at idle but can be heard as it revs up a little.

Sounds like piston slap but to tell while the engine is running just pull off a spark plug wire one at a time. If the tic stops it is piston slap.

The engine does not smoke and has no blow by. The top end was built and has a few thousand miles on it. I have to put in a torque converter. Has a bad shake in OD going down the highway but goes away if you let out or touch the breaks. Was told by local transmission shop that the torque converter was bad. They also told me to make sure that the third brake light is working because the electronic OD switch is on the same circuit and has been the cause of torque converter failure if the light isnt working. Have any of you guys heard that?

The OD switch is on fuse #17 circuit and the stop light is on fuse #13 circuit.
One fuse will not bother the other fuses circuit.

Don't think I have heard of the third brake light thing but it does sound like torque converter, you might also check u-joints .does it only do it in over drive or when at a certain speed.?

Yea that follows along with that type of exhaust leak supporting that diagnoses, louder when cold then quieting down once up to running temp.

The heat makes the metal expand slightly closing the gap a little bit limiting or even at times completely stopping the leak once everything is hot.

My 460 does it too,l not anything loud but noticeable if listen for it, after its been running for a couple minutes it no longer leaks and is quiet.

When it gets worse I'll fix it, until then its just not worth getting into.
