You're about screwed....
Auto fab is just about the only way to do it correctly. If it wasn't so expensive I would have probably done it already too.
Now, there are other ways, such as coil spacers and flipping the i beams, but nothing that is going to actually be drivable....
I have the idea for a company to make a set of lift beams, just like they do lowering beams. But there wouldn't be any added suspension travel. It would only raise the truck.

I bought the AutoFab 5 inch lift for my '75. Mine however is a 1 ton, and the 1 ton lift was pretty heavy in price. In total, it was $2700. I had 3 sets of beams I sent to him. After he took the cores off for those the kit was $1900 after shipping.
I really do recommend the kit. Like you, I was looking into alternatives and was coming up with the same results you are. I almost converted my 2wd into a 4wd, but decided against it. I was looking into having custom drop brackets made, but those put a lot of stress on the suspension.
His kit comes with everything you need. The 5in kit comes with extended radius arms and new brackets, all the bushings and bolts you need. I hate to tell you to go with the expensive kit, because when I was looking, I was hoping someone would give me a cheap alternative. But alas, there is none. You can see a few pics of my lift on my profile.
