No start without starting fluid

My 2000 4.2 will not start without start fluid! New fuel filter. I can hear the pump activate with key in on position. Checked all fuses..At one point it would start after 3 cranks pausing to hear pump in-between cranks. Now I have to use start fluid. It will run fine after starting...Help!!

I am not familiar enough with that motor to be much help, but your symptoms as described point to either weak spark or low compression. The starting fluid is making the fuel air mix more volatile and easier to ignite. Once there is fire, the residual heat helps the ignition process. Does the motor idle normally?

How have you ruled these items out? After the engine warms up, can you shut down and immediately restart normally?

Yes, I have ruled them out...It will restart once or twice and then act like it has "lost prime" and will have to spray again.
