Norton is the brand used at work. Being so heavily regulated by msha, they can't afford to skimp. I've had cutting wheels break on me and the pieces do not get launched. The discs just fall apart. Both times can be contributed to operator error!

Looked at the disks in the video. About 2 bucks a piece. Not too bad for a disk that will last a long time. Gotta buy 50 at a time though.

Doesn't matter what type of grinder or wheel you're using if, if you don't control the tool something bad will happen two summers ago I was cutting a 3.5x.2.5 piece of steel, there was a loud noise behind me and I twisted the grinder just a little bit - The wheel came apart - I only got a small nick on my shoulder - Most of the fragments were contained by the grinder shield and the table the vice was on

Yeah, they definitely can explode. From the little research I did it seems most of the bad injuries come from those that remove the guard and use the tool improperly. Then there are the ones that install a larger disc than the tool should take. The larger wheel exceeds the maximum rpm and violently shatter.

Then there are the "caught bye's". I read one where the wheel caught the pull string from the users hoodie. It ran right up it and drew the grinder and the user together. It ended badly.

So far so good with me. Careful out there guys.

Yeah, he is not going to do much cutting with the blade on backwards.

I've had good luck with the ten pack of metal cutting blades from HF. Never blown one up yet. KOW

Well, at least he removed the shield so the blade would fit.

Or how about "I got tired of all them flimsy blades exploding on me, so I fixed it."

I just ordered some to try. I found them on Amazon. The part number advertised is for the Type 27 but the picture shows a picture of Type 1. Not a bad price for 25 discs. We'll see if they last like they say. I needed some discs anyway.

Didn't look on amazon. Went to United Abrasives site. Pack of 50 for about 90 bucks. A slight discount if you buy 50 I guess. Still money ahead if they last like they say. Ross' pic is pretty spooky. I have a brush trimmer with a chainsaw blade sorta thing down there. Don't use it without my chaps and boots. S'pose that guy in the pic thought he made a specialty tool. Hope he has a specialty surgeon on speed dial.

I have been looking for the 5 inch version, P/N 22235, without luck.... I have seen some listed by various vendors but the ones with the best prices are out of stock. No listing on Amazon; well, $278.03 for a box of 50 or $7.69 + 7.09 shipping EACH...that is a "no listing" for me. I didn't see a way to buy direct on the United Abrasives site unless you are a distributor.

*UPDATE* - I just found a vendor, Tanner Bolt, who sells the 5 inch 22235 version for $98.28 box of 50...got some on order.

^^ Nice. It took me a while to locate the size I wanted too. I had a hard time finding the T27's in the 4 1/2" size in a reasonable quantity. Don't want to buy a huge order without trying first. If I like them I'll just order the 100 count package and be set for a good long while with discs .

Very recently, a friend of mine decided to install a mega-coarse wire brush on his grinder to descale some wrought iron. The grinder clearly exceeded the RPM limits of the brush and two strands launched an inch deep into his forearm... said he got queezy pulling them out before going to the doctor.......
I have 4 Grinders each with dedicated purpose. My wheels and flaps are Makita because that's all my little town Hardware Store carries.

I did see a guy bury a cut-off wheel in his chin one time before I retired. He figured his decades as a "welding sage" excused him from proper usage and protection.

All we are is "Ducks" in the wind.....

I know that song I hear songs a lot differently than most. Just thinking this topic would be a good safety thread with pics and all of our experience's. Might not be a pretty one but might help somebody. I have a pic on phone that I am trying to send to this thread but to avail I will send to desk top and go from here.
