What to look for in a used 6.7

Hey all!

I am looking at a 2011 F250 Supercab with the 6.7. The truck is a Lariat with around 150,000 miles on it. It's at a dealership that I work for, and they havnt had the chance to cover anything up or even touch it for that matter.

I've had a little experience with a 97 7.3 that I own, but I havnt ventured much into the 6.7 yet.

What kinds of things should I look for mechanically when I test drive it? I know it's a one owner truck with no accidents reported, but that's about it so far. I will be getting an Oasis report on it early this week.

Any help you all could provide would be great. I just want to be sure I'm not buying a worn out truck. Thanks!

from my expierence with three 5.4's, a v-10, and a 6.4, I would definitely say that 150K miles is a worn out truck that will need much hardware refreshing......everyone's guess as to what will need to be replaced would be correct. there's nothing about a 6.7 that would make it impervious to wear and tear.

It would come down to price for me. I like to factor in doing common fixes at those miles so if the deal was good enough I would jump on it.

150k isn't nothing for a Diesel, I think if it were gas model then yes I would take a step back and rethink but check all the normal items you would on any vehicle and like you said your getting the Oasis report. That will tell you some things of importance and if needed get the carfax report since you do work at the dealer anyhow. Besides that I would take it for a ride, check brakes, check oil, tires, transmission how it shifts both normal driving and under a throttle response, make sure turbo spools.

All in all check all fluids you can possible check. Look for any modification done to it if any. Besides the normal stuff to check I would say if the price is right and below the market value then pick it up.

Now that the deal is done you could probably get in touch with the old owner and see if there were any secrets he had before trading it in. Let them know you're considering buying it yourself. If they had any trouble they'll probably be honest about it now. You can also then ask how they used it, what they towed, what they bought to replace, etc. Good or bad, it's good info to have, and far better than just the carfax.

Great info guys. I really appreciate it.

I've been all over that thing today. The Oasis report came back pretty clean with some minor warranty work in it's early years. I checked all of things listed avove, and as far as I can tell it passed. There was an oil leak coming from the oil filter, but I think maybe it just didn't get tight or was residual spill. I tightened it up and cleaned it off so we will see tomorrow if it leaked over night.

As for getting ahold of the previous owner, I'm still trying to get his contact information. The truck really seems like it was taken care of, so unless I see something outragous tomorrow I think I'm going to pull the trigger.

Any last minute information you all could throw my way would be great. I'm sure I'll be up most of the night researching more and more!

Thank you guys for the help.

PS - I'm at about $19,000 right now.

Can you get them to give you a 30 day warranty or something since you work there? The biggest concerns should be oil leaks and driveability issues that may not come up until you drive it for a few days or so. Does it run good when cold? At 150k on any super duty, unless they were previously done, you get into all the wear and tear items that can add up$(bearings, brakes, seals, shocks, all fluids, steering components etc. Of course many SD trucks really go a long ways without much needed but I have also seen some unhappy used SD buyers in this mile range and lower constantly repairing things. Yes, 150k isn't much on a diesel, it's all of the components attached to it that allow it run.

Thats a lot of miles in a short period of time. It may be a good buy if the price is right. Don;t think that because you work there that you will get a great price. Do some research on the prices in your area before making the deal.

I don't know much about the 6.7, but didn't a small number of the trucks from the earlier years have valve problems that would grenade the engine?

Have the dealer also get you a Carfax report on the truck. Oasis reports only show work done or captured in Ford service departments. Collision work, flood damage, or work not done by Ford may not be captured on an Oasis report.

If the truck was regularly serviced, then 150K miles on a diesel is just about broken in. Unfortunately, you still will have to consider brakes, which do get kind of costly if they haven't been completely gone through. Next, ball joints, shocks and possibly some rear springs if used to haul heavy, i.e. a big 5th wheel trailer. Yeah, there will probably be a few 'nigglers' like 12v or 110v power points and maybe a fan/drive belt but that's what 150K does. Mine has but 83.7K and I've done the brakes including rotors, pads and calipers, new gas shocks plus added air bags for out 5er.

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having the previous owners info and it sounds like it may have been serviced where you work all its life is a huge positive. If you have the service log on oil and other fluid change intervals and can see that all this maintenance was performed at or around the suggested intervals that's gold IMO! 150K on a well maintained Diesel is just broken in. You should get 300K with strict maintenance. The Trans fluid n filter change would be the next area of concern. Was it done every 30-35K ish? Or never? Never is not good, neither is a first time trans service at say 120K. This would be good price leverage/barter material.
Rust is the next issue. Get under it and examine the bed rail supports, cab mounts, inner rockers etc... Look up behind the rubber flap in the rear wheel wells where the inner well and quarter panel are "glued" together with the lovely sponge like material. Your looking for the infamous rust out spot there. If all this is clean your way ahead here.
Krown rust proof this rig as soon as you buy it.
19 seems a bit high to me for 5 year old truck with 150K. It would need to be really rust/crust free to be 19K. Beat them down a few grand IMO 16.5 to 17 is a decent deal IMO. You know they gave the previous owner less on the trade.
