K&N air filter, good or bad

Hello,

My new to me 1997 F350 has a K&N air filter on the cold air intake. I have heard mixed messages in regards to K&N filters and dusting. Do you have any recommendations on what filter is best for protection and performance in conjunction with the TS chip?

Thanks

They are not good. Go with a Donaldson or Napa 6637 fi!ter. Search the forum there are many threads about them.

Inserting a picture of the K&N filter on the cold air intake. The stock filter box has been removed. Does Donaldson make a replacement filter that would work with this setup?

Remove the oem box, cut the pipe so that the new 6637- or equivalent filter fits in there

Welcome to FTE! Nice truck! If you go with a 6637 style filter, make sure it is one that has the screen on the inside like on the outside. I know the Baldwin does, but not sure what others do. Riffraff sells the Baldwin.

Thank you rebuild. I will check them out. Looks like the filter is longer and as one other stated, I will need to cut the pipe. What do most people use to cut the aluminum pipe?

Portable band saw or hack saw. Or, a cutting wheel in an electric grinder or pneumatic cut off tool if you have one. Remove the lower half of that stock air box also.

when you get the 6637 from RiffRaff, get a filter cover too. the cover really does a good job of keeping the filter clean. i have 3 of them, one on each truck and a spare. every 6 months i swap the spare for one of he used ones and wash the used one.
i get 50k miles out of the 6637 by keeping the cover clean.

I agree with Tom. I bought a bunch of parts from RiffRaff and forgot to order filter covers. I need to remember to buy covers with my next order.

This is what my NAPA 6637 modification looks like. I painted the elbow, but it isn't required. Like many others, I do not trust the K&N due to the many stories of dusting issues. I have no personal experience with this issue, but I do have a lot of good experiences with the 6637 filter.

All of us are running 6637's for the most part.

K&N are not bad, but they just dont filter well enough when clean and you suck up dirt.

the 6637's flow more than enough CFM to make our trucks sing.

Just gotta pull the old box out and put in the 6637.

You can use the current pipe you have in there already. Or shorten it like somebody suggested.

So is the NAPA 6637 a washable filter then? What is the ID of the filter where it clamps to the pipe. I also have the same K&N setup as the OP and the pipe seems smaller than the one shown above (BLUE).

you're not supposed to.
I 5 gallon bucket dunk it.

It gets the big dirt off, but you gotta not blast it with air compressor.
